Meet the new girls

Recommended Posts

Hi Em

Aren't they lovely and they are going to be huuuuuuuuge

They are only 12 weeks at the moment and come from a truly mad woman called Sandy Hildreth up in Lincolnshire. She has got some gorgeous Orps at the moment, including lovely choc bantams. She's also trying to breed mauve.

I think her website is Orpingtons Galore or she's in Practical Poultry breeders section as A1 Orpingtons.

Ive got my name down for splash, jubilee, mauve etc etc etc........

You know Sandy is one of the best breeders of orps in the country? You should have some good stock there  I can already see the lacing looks good on the blues but of course you'll have to wait a while to see how it finally develops. I'm after some large white girls myself this year but am hoping to find them a bit closer to home!

She does have some stunning birds and is a very knowledgeable lady. The colours she has at the moment are fantastic and well worth a visit.

I'm hoping to enter the whites in to a few shows in the future if I can keep them clean .

They are sooooooooo cuddly. If you want Orps Em, bantam or large she is definitely the lady to see. If you do decide to go let me know and I might well tag along :lol: Make it when hubby's working away and he will never know

That's what I though Daphne. Luckily my Tony run has a solid roof, but keeping them out of the sun whilst the others are free ranging might be more than I can bear. :( Do you think just a short while each day or evening free ranging would be ok?

I've just emailed Sandy regarding some bantams which I was taken with when we visited.

Where's the pic of the new girls then Em?

I am sure you have to watch the food for whites too...some feed has pigmenters in which can turn them yellow apparently!

My newbies were smuggled in under darkness on Sunday so no chance for a photo session yet as I have been working. Saturday I promise!

I'm feeling quite jealous - there are a couple of Lincs based breeders I'd love to be near!

Earlyish morning/evening free ranging with lower light levels should be OK I would think - but like you, I couldn't really bear to confine them too much. My white boy hasn't lost his yellow tinge even with the moult.

So = maybe you should think of showing the blues? Or getting another colour especially for showing  Altho buffs can bleach as well - they go paler or get uneven but I think its less noticeable/doesn't always happen, and actually so do the blues - they can sometimes get a brownish tinge particularly around the lacing.

Em's right - you don't want to feed them Garvo as that has something in it to help the yellow pigment that some breeds have in their legs. Partridge newbies (plural!) I note

I've heard that the Garvo feed can turn them yellow.....but since all my girls turn their beaks up at that I'm ok

I managed to sneak a Pug into the house last time OH was working away, and he's always so jet lagged for a couple of days he didn't notice until he tripped over the pup :lol:

How good he miss this?

I think you're right there Daphne. I'd better get a couple of the 'easier' colours to show. That's not like adding more to the flock really is it. Hopefully I'll hear back from Sandy soon regarding some lovely bantams she had. I think a selection of colours would be best don't you?:whistle::whistle:
