Sad bunny news and happy bunny news

Recommended Posts

As you might have seen we took on two rabbits from someone at work a while ago. Well, they were in a run on earth with wire underneath that was overlaid in layers, but Smudge dug her way out of that. So I laid a patio on the veg patch (as you do for your pets!) and put the run on there. Then about 10 days ago I came down in the morning to see Blossom at the bottom of the garden again, but no sign of Smudge. One look at the run showed me a fox had ripped the wire away from one side. I was gutted as the run is the same materials as the hen house and we've never lost a hen to a fox. Anyway, Blossom was re-captured, but all we found of Smudge was a tuft of fur.

I felt really really guilty and have now made the run even MORE secure with wood all round the bottom, but obviously Blossom is now without her friend. That said, she's totally come out of her dominated shell and is much more confident without Smudge who was a bit of a bully.

Anyway, knowing what sociable creatures they are we went to the RSPCA on Saturday and have reserved her a friend! Apparently adult neutered girls need adult neutered boys as companions so that's what we're getting. I wanted Timmy, a chocolate coloured lionhead cross who was gorgeous, or Hagrid a beautiful russett coloured BIG bunny, but the children fell for the sob story pinned to Milos cage - "Please give me a home, I've been here for 8 months and really want a girlfriend" And so, we had our home visit this evening, and we're picking him up Saturday. :D I hope he makes Blossom happy! :D

He's the white one bottom left with the rather stunning blue eyes! (edited to say sorry, can't get it to go straight to his page, if you're interested go to "adopting an animal" then Animals for adoption, then small animals THEN he's bottom left!)

Sad and happy to hear your news. Interested in what goes with what as I have a widowed neutered male. So may if feeling up to it look at rescue bun to keep him company. Have not mentioned to kids as they would have me there like NOW. Lost our little girl yesterday. Sorry about your baby - you did all you could. Enjoy your new bun. Ali xx

Poor you Beckyboo and what a shock.

Best wishes with your new addition to the family and thank you for the link. Lovely bunny.

I had a shock this morning when I went to let the rabbits out - it's like losing Frank all over again and I keep crying. Bonnie and Bandit are in the eglu/run near the house on the patio and when I let them out in the morning I walk down to the lawn to spend a little time with them. What a complete shock - there was a deep hole just where Frank had been laid to rest and beside it was Frank still wrapped tightly in his favourite blanket. We think that the fox must have been disturbed either by us or by one of the cats. We've put little Frank back but this time with paving slabs on top. We lost him in August so I'm surprised to have it happen now. :(

I am really shocked as this happened to our last rabbit at our last house. Yesterday we put Dandelion in a box in the ground with a paving slab over the top. I will have to keep an eye out althou I have never seen a fox. so sorry - we are an unlucky lot with our buns. Need good news soon

Thank you cathybc and nochucksyet - yes horrid and I agree, we definitely need some good news here don't we. Right now, I'd settle for the sun shining - which its trying very hard to do here this morning.

We're going to get a security camera so that we can keep a closer eye on things.

So, Beckyboo, can't wait to hear you've taken in your new addition and hope we might see pictures :D

Well, we got Milo on Saturday and a very cute boy he is too! No pictures yet as he's confined to a standard hutch which is wire to wire with Blossoms run so they can "meet" each other to see how they get on. So far so good, no aggression and a fair bit of interest. Apparently according to the home-checker (who knows more about rabbits than I will EVER know!) if they don't bond it's a good idea to take them both out for a car ride, as they'll be so stressed through the car trip that they'll bond together - safety in numbers, that sort of thing! You can just imagine me explaining THAT one if I got stopped!!:lol:

So hopefully, over the next few days I'll get them out into neutral ground together, mix a bit of bedding, then next weekend will try them both in the run together for a while. THEN I'll take some pictures, he has HUGE blue eyes! :D
