Could this possibly mean more chickens

My neighbour has a maybe two acre field on a hill that is left rough and planted with native trees (all still small) that abuts our garden. He kindly let us fence off about 30 feet square so that we could put our 4 hens there. Hooray we now have a garden back

In the space of two months they have reduced it to .... well .... not much grass anyway

We were chatting over the fence and he remarked how surprised he was at how much rotavating four little hens can do and why on earth didn't I let them out into the rest of his land I said I couldn't ask that

I have opened the gate and they are happily scratching around.

OSH this is interesting I have asked (but no reply yet) Aviva who own the field behind us if we could let our ladies peck around a bit of the field. The land is sadly zoned for housing development but not for some years. Could you post a photo as I am interested to see how you access their field - is the dividing fence still intact I have to say the "more hens " has occurred to me too

Hubby just put a gate in. A simple frame with chicken wire, easy to reinstate the original boundary. Best of luck

I'm in the same lucky position OSH. My farming neighbour was more than happy to let use a bit at the bottom of our garden when I decided I wanted a go at raising some meat birds. Actually his son presented me with 26 Light Sussex cockerels to raise rather than him culling them, but that's another story.

 

Anyhoooo, a little while later he asked why I wasn't letting them out into the field so I took the hint and made a couple of popholes in the fence. I don't like to take the mick though because he won't accept any money, so I keep my numbers to the level that the "official bit" can comfortably sustain as grass for most of the year - just in case he changes his mind!
