silkiesitter
is there anyone who can help me as i have a serious problem.. i have 6 silkies 2 6weeks old 4 3weeks old and all of them are shaking there heads from side to side quite fast, sometimes it sends them dizzy. ive also noticed that my egg layers are doing it now, they are all eating, drinking, scratting plenty they look as well as any other. but every 10 seconds there shaking there head, they must be fed up with it. ive given them antibiotics.(vetromox) for 3 days, there still the same. I was told it could be mites but i looked last night and found nothing. ive looked down there mouth, in there ears up there nose and everything looks just fine. please if anyone can help it would be much appreciated. im at my wits end

So you can worm them from then.
Egluntyne
Sounds like some sort of virus to me. I wouldn't administer the antibiotics without a vet's say so tbh.

Chucky Mama
I wouldn't administer the antibiotics without a vet's say so tbh. I would echo that, if the antibiotics that you have were not precribed to them by a vet for this condition then consult the vets first. I'm not sure it sounds like worms but am happy to be corrected
silkiesitter
thanks, do they get worms soo young and why shaking the head
Egluntyne
They could certainly get worms at this young age if they are out and about on ground that has been ranged on by other hens. It is possible that they might have ear mites, which are microscopically small, so even though you have had a look, you probably wouldn't be be able to see them. I'd take a couple to the vet if there is no improvement.

Egluntyne
I'd make sure that they are warm, and drinking plenty, and take a couple to the vet tomorrow if there is no improvement, or a deterioration. If you have some Citricidal, or Respite, it might be worth adding some to the drinking water.

Redwing
i'd say its some sort of mites, silkies do get them in their hairdo and ears.......... vets is best though for a proper diagnosis
Patricia W
Has the vet ruled out Cerebral Hernia? It's a condition peculiar to crested breeds especially Polish and Silkies. The onset is described as a wobble in the head which increases in severity. The research done has confirmed a genetic mutation connected with the gene for a dominant crest. It's more prevalent with young birds between 1 and 4 months of age. I lost Plop, my baby Polish to this a few months ago. It is usually fatal ( as it was with Plop) but in a few cases, an injection of cortisone plus a course of antibotics has worked. It didn't work for Plop though. However, it is rare and it would be awfully bad luck to have your whole flock affected! Might be worth ruling out though Tricia
