WIR Questions - Please help!!!

Recommended Posts

Cant believe I am saying this but....I might be getting a WIR!!!!!!

It will only be small-ish and will be from CMS (which so far couldnt be more helpful) as cant afford an A4U one. However looking at 8" wide, 6" tall and 4" deep.

I have loads of questions though before I order and hoping those in the know can help...

I am planning on putting the Eglu on the inside of the run. I will need to take it in out for cleaning etc. The Eglu is 80cm wide. Can someone advise me what width their door is at of the WIR so comfortable for getting in and out.

Do you have your WIR with a wooden floor or no floor so is on bare earth - whats better?

Roof - I want it covered to protect from rain. What is best?

Roof - should I ask/pay more for sloping room because of rain?

The bottom of the WIR will have layer of aubiose, should I have an edging on the outside of the WIR to stop the aubiose getting kicked out or not a problem?

Is it best to have the EGlu on the floor or on something? If it goes on something what has been used so they can get up in to it?

Lastly! I would like to still use the Eglu feeders and drinkers - how can I attach them to the new mesh which will be half inch square?

Thank you - I am SO excited and hope I can get one!

My run is just finished being built so I am no expert but my roof is onduline at a slope, cost nothing extra as joiner just made back 50ml shorter than front.

I have earth in mine with auboise put on top and with the tarp covering the mesh when raining I assume it will stay dry.

My run is placed on sleeper type wood so the auboise will be below, if they kick it out I shall put a kick plate round the run

I used part of my cube fencing to hang my feeders on.

I have a cube so can answer the questions on eglu

good luck

I occasionally take my spare (purple eglu) into the WIR and find it easiest to do it in two pieces - the top and then the base. My door is just under 1m wide but the eglu goes in and comes out on its side rather than straight. Not sure how to explain it best :?

My run has a slabbed base as I find it easier for cleaning as I just sweep up the aubiose :D there is about a 2ft section which is bare earth and after a year of being covered it has dried out so this is sweepable too! Be aware that the wooden fram on the WIR will get wet and not last as long if on earth. Will probably take a long time to rot though if it is treated wood.

I have clear corrugated plastic sheets but some people use Corriline/Conduline (sp?) which is black/green. I like my clear roof as it lets lots of light in but it can get warm on super hot days - I do attach shading to the inside of the roof in summer

Roof - should I ask/pay more for sloping room because of rain?

I would say yes! guttering and a waterbutt is a good idea too. If the roof comes flat as standard then you could create the slope yourself by adding different guage battens to the frame.

I would say YES YES YES! I have 4inch boards but they still manage to flick it onto the path

I would raise it up as it means more floor space for the chooks and less bending down for you. you can buy cube ladders on their own from Omlet. I think they were about £20 inc postage but otherwise a piece of baord with runs screwed on. Ikea sell a dining room table that the eglu will fit on. LEWIS!!!!!! *Em shouts* he knows where they are online I am sure

I don`t use the grubs and glugs anymore but when I did i used THIS

Thank you - I am SO excited and hope I can get one!

Ingo dining table - £29

Boybeck had an (green eglu) on the smaller Ingo table, which looks a perfect fit but they don't sell them anymore :(

Congratulations :D . You won't regret it :D .

I've just measured mine - it's 83cm :) . I tend to take the top out separately too.

WIR rests on slabs, the floor is bare earth with bedding. Works really well for me. I remove the top layer every couple of months, put Stalosan F down then new bedding.

Roof - I want it covered to protect from rain. What is best?

I've got corrugated plastic on the roof and various glass clear tarpaulins on the sides. It stays pretty dry inside.

Roof - should I ask/pay more for sloping room because of rain?

I would say yes. Otherwise the water will just sit and stagnate. Even though mine's sloping, I still get green gunk in places :? . You'll probably need guttering too if the water would run off where you'll be walking.

The bottom of the WIR will have layer of aubiose, should I have an edging on the outside of the WIR to stop the aubiose getting kicked out or not a problem?

The slabs keep my WIR quite high compared to the level of the middle of the run floor. Some gets kicked out but not much.

I really like having the eglu up high. It's easier to get to and makes for more floor space. I made a ladder out of the old wooden roosting bars and a bit of a pallet. Mine rests on lino to make it easy to swivel to remove the poo tray.

Lastly! I would like to still use the Eglu feeders and drinkers - how can I attach them to the new mesh which will be half inch square?

The Ikea Groken (?) rails look good.

Thanks everyone, so far so good and have received a good quote from CMS and waiting for my A4U quote.

My one main issue is whether to have a floor or not.

I can either leave the floor bare and so it will sit on slabs that we'll put down with aubiose on top of slabs or i can have a wooden base that will come with it so then will add aubiose to the bottom on top of the wood.
