Black copper marans

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have experience with black copper marans? I am thinking of adding 2 pullets to a flock of 4 gingernut pullets. Any thoughts? I am new to chickens and I don't want to mess this up.

thanks

Colette.

They are lovely hens, I have 4 along with 4 Wheaten Marans and they are so easy to keep and very friendly. Their colouring is stunning especially when they get the sun on their backs. The eggs are amazing, they are a very rich chocolate brown.

Hi, I have two copper black marans, and can really recommend them. They are friendly, easy to keep, and their eggs are really pretty too.

Fully grown, they should be a size or so bigger than your gingernuts (who I guess would be a similar size to my ex-batts and legbars). My two have recently started laying at the grand old age of 8 months, and their eggs are already the same size as that of my two-year-old ex-batts!

They are quite docile now that they have started laying (by which I mean they will allow me to pick them up ... most of the time). When I first got them, they were extremely flighty; see my thread at http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=52168 for how high they can go, even with their wings clipped. Theoretically speaking, they should become less interested in flying/jumping over time, but this has not happened for me yet: last night one of them jumped on top of the Cube run, clipped wing and all, to help herself from the treat pot.

I have one in my flock - Loubie - and she gets on great with all of the other girls :) I've never had a problem with her, she's very friendly :) I've had her for a long while, she was a chick when i got her, about 3-4 weeks old i think! She's laying now, and she does some gorgeous tasting eggs :)

Thanks for all the helpful answers.I like the idea of the marans but am a little concerned about the flying. I am installing electric wire on top of a 5 .5 ft fence (coyotes) and don't want the little monsters to fry themselves.

My cube is winging its way from Blighty as we speak and the ginger girls are arriving April 29 (the posting of chickens freaks me out a little, still people have been doing it for years)

Another question (sorry) if I introduce all 6 pullets at one time do I need to quarantine them because they are from different sources. Other than the cube, I do not have anywhere secure to put them.

I think I am over thinking all this new chicken stuff and freaking myself out. I just need to calm down and enjoy.

Thanks everyone.

Colette.
