Lindsay
Quick update..... all seems well this morning, though marigold has taken herself off to sit on her log, looking a bit sorry for herself. New girls in the eglu run for now, eating well, but Treacle still very timid and had to be 'helped' out of the eglu this morning! Having come from an open barn environment, it's no wonder they are a bit bemused at the whole 'eglu' experience!! Anyway, so far, so good ... little bit of pecking from Marigold last night, but no blood drawn!
Elaine C
Lindsay, how has it gone with your girls today? My girls have been ok today confined to the run for most of the day. I did let them out late afternoon while I was doing bedroom cleaning and they all got soaked as we've had a few heavy showers. A few minor peckings and chasing around so I'm happy at leaving them to it while at work during the day and hopefully by the end of the week they will not only be tolerating each other but will be one integrated flock. I have to say it does help having more than the eglu run for introductions. Have you got any pics yet? E
Lindsay
No pics as yet Elaine, must get to grips with it soon! Girls got on ok yesterday. They were all in a small netted off area together and were happily scratching around in the bushes. Marigold seemed to perk up when we were all out in the garden together. They are all sleeping in the eglu with no obvious problems and the new girls are getting braver .... not sure if M is actually afraid of them and not the other way round!! Bit concerned about M this morning, she hasn't been eating very much over the last week, but could be tempted with treats etc. The last 2 days however, she's hardly eating anything and when offered grapes or sweetcorn, she just picks it out of my hand and puts it on the ground and walks off. She doesn't seem to be drinking much either. Not sure what to do, as she looks ok and is active and quite perky? I would welcome any suggestions you may have! (Sorry ... should I have put this query in the Chicken Clinic section?)
kannie
I guess it could just be the emotional / social upheaval, Lindsay. You're obviously keeping an eye on her, but I agree its worrying when they don't eat, and probably even more worrying when they don't dring. Can you get hold of her and check her over more closely? Is she laying?
chelsea
im a worrier too. last week Sam wouldnt eat her treats (which is most unusual) and she was very quiet and still. couple of days later she laid the most humungous egg so whether that had anything to do with it I dont know keep an eye on your chook, as you dont want her to get dehydrated if she's not drinking. she could just be having an "off" couple of days like my Sam. Elaine C
Has M been eating and drinking today? Not sure what to suggest but perhaps Kannies suggestion of emotional and/or social upheaval could be a possibility since she is active and perky otherwise. Also a good suggestion to see if you can have a closer check over her. Otherwise keep an eye on her and have a bit of a chat with her. Sorry no real advice here but hope she is back to herself soon. Lindsay
Thanks for all your suggestions, I really appreciate them. In the end I took Marigold to the vet, just to put my mind at rest and have her checked over. He said he couldn't find anything specific, although she sounded a little wheezy in one side of her lungs. Apart from that, she seemed healthy, but had obviously lost a little weight. She's on antibiotics now, and seems alot better today ... went straight for the food this morning! Anyway, I think it's just a 'watch n wait' situation at the moment. The new girls seem ok, but definitely don't like the wind and rain, so lots of tlc for them too! I think they are all just showing signs of a bit of stress at meeting each other, so hopefully things will settle down. What a worry! But I do love them to bits!!
