Eggy-Bread
Hi, Please help. Matilda is looking very uncomfortable - she's waddling with her legs wide apart, her abdomen is hard and swollen and appears to be hanging or held low. She is eating ok & drinking (and still able to boss the others) & will still chase after treats. She's not staying in the nest or sitting hunched up, but sometimes she fluffs up her feather so she looks round. I have 'examined' her vent but cannot distinguish an egg and I've tried her in a warm bath for 20 mins. I aim to take her to the vet as soon as poss (why does this always happen on a bank holiday and just as I am about to go away?), but has anyone any ideas or insight or tips to help me? Egluntyne
It sounds as if she has peritonitis. I would take her to the vet who might be able to remove some of the fluid to make her more comfortable. It might respond to treatment with antibiotics.
Plum
Bad timing but you can't let her suffer. I would take her to a vet tomorrow.
kerryegg
Sounds identical to my problem with Pepper. Tried all the usual things including warm bathes but decided against seeing a vet. She was bright enough until the day I decided to have her put down. Enjoyed mackerel just before she went and for the first time ever seemed to appreciate cuddles. She would have been 3 in August, my first Omlet hen. What ever you decide to do I hope it works out o.k. I decided not th keep her as was 100% sure after all my research that it was sterile peritonitis. All best wishes.
Eggy-Bread
Just got back from the vet with 'Tilda. Not too good but not given up hope. She's on Baytril now for the next 2 weeks and OH is taking her back to the vet on Friday for a check-up (I have to go away on Thursday for 4 days - timing is absolutely pants). Please send lots of warm chicken thoughts for my girl . Thank you to everyone who responded, as always it's so good to know there are other chicken parents out there.
