ewungelema
Please can you give me your thoughts......? Our hens live in a secure, roofed (is that a word?or is it rooved???) WIR with an Eglu classic to sleep in. We were away for a few nights over the Easter weekend and neighbours kindly collected the eggs each day. As they haven't been hensitters before, and the weather mildish, I told them that the eglu didn't need shutting each night. Now that we're home again (and the days are getting longer) should I revert to closing the girls in or let them chose when to go in and out? Obviously, should frost or extreme wind or rain be forecast I'd secure them for then night....
chick wiggle
Hi, and welcome i leave the doors open then they can let themselves in and out whenever they want to. I only close the doors ( as they too are in a secure WIR) in very extreme cold weather.
Laura & CTB
I have quite happily left the door open for them when I've been away because they are in a secure run - the only reason I shut the door usually is to keep them a bit quieter during the summer months otherwise they'd be out and bokking at very early a.m.
Olly
It's down to how safe you feel they are - I never shut the Eglu door, either when they had an Eglu run attached or now that they're in a very secure WIR. If I'm honest, it's more for my benefit than theirs! but I do like them to be able to get up and go to bed when they want to.
Saronne
I always lock mine up - just to be on the safe side. Saronne x
Egluntyne
I don't shut mine in at night, even during the cold spell I let the door open and they were fine. However, the Eglu is only considered fox resistant as opposed to fox proof with the door open. You have to weigh up the dangers in your own particular area. annettec
I leave the door open on my Eglu in fact only shut it when it went well below freezing even in the winter I would need to be up so early to let them out in the mornings and so far all ok
