Advice for a new MummyHen

Recommended Posts

Hi

I've been lurking here for a number of weeks and now have my Cube (cube red) with 3m run and hens.

Three hybrids and two orpys.

Got the hybrids on Wednesday and the Orpys yesterday - the Orpy breeder advised to introduce them at night which I did. I let them out this am and all hells broken out - the Orpys are pecking the other three, chasing them round and three hybrid girls have now retreated into the cube.

I'd appreciate any advice

Welcome to the forum, Rachel, and congratulations on your new cube and chickens  .

As the "old" girls haven't been around for more than a couple of days, I'd have my fingers crossed that any nonsense is going to be short lived. If not, Falkor's advice is the way to go 8) .

(A water pistol is a good weapon to use if you're in the garden with them and see any bullying  .)

Hi. just a bit of first hand experience. I read all the introduction information but my new 3 bought to join my last omlet chook managed to climb a tree and jump into the run several times. They are clipped. Ginger my Omlet girl gave them all a good neck pecking. I separated them numerous times, but on Thursday, 6 days after I got them decided to let them all in together. I had been playing musical hens all week as all 4 needed the nesting box apparently at the same time. All laid from day one.

At night I wait until Ginger goes to bed then move her to the summer house as she won't let the others into the eglu. Tonight I am going to see what happens if i just leave them together. If necesary I will pop the 3 new ones in after Ginger has gone to sleep and get up to let them out even earlier than usual. Sill a bit of neck pecking but all in all I think I have been quite lucky. The new ones are Marans. Good luck with your introductions.

kerryegg I had the same trouble with my intros last year the 2 big girls were fine duering the day but were not prepared to share they're bed room one hid just inside the door the other patroled the perch to kick the new ones off.once that settled down for the night and i'd put the new ones on the perch they were ok but i took best part of 2 month before peace broke out.

heres hoping your intros go quicker

MummyHen you'll find that they squoble for a few day's you might have to sinbin the worst offender just to calm things down if you can catch her I've got 2 that are being a nasty to my 2 newbies but I can only catch the one

I've been lucky too, I introduced 2 new girls to my lone chicken after a fox attack took her 2 friends last Sunday. I had them separated in the eglu run all afternoon but they managed to break through and after a little initial pecking from Scarlett were fine, they went to bed together that night and are now settled :D

Thanks you all for the warm welcome.

Overnight they all seemed very well behaved - I checked them a couple of time before bed and the coop was all very peaceful. Let hope it just a blip and in a few days they will have settled.

I've printed off the advice and will now retreat to the garden to observe and see what action I need to take.

Its been much more peaceful here - thankfully.

Mad dash to pet shop to buy some temporary housing - the new girls are now side by side.

After some initial load clucking, head bobbing and pacing up & down - traquility has decended.

Hi! Welcome to the fourm!

Your girls are stunning! Love the orpys expecailly.

I cant really give much more advice than the others have, but keep a eye out, mine fighted first of all when i introduced my too silkie x pekins to my pekin girls, i put the bully (EDWARD, its a hen..) into a seperate cat carrier with food and water, facing the coope, and he soon learnt his lesson, after i felt evil.. and had to give her meal worms! hehe but they got on after that! :)

Goodluck, i love them buff orpys.. there absolutly gorgeous, i'm slightly jelous! haha.
