Protuding something or other from quail's vent

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have come home from work this evening to see that one of the quail had a trail of something bloody hanging from her vent - I can't really see what it is, although it looks like a sack of some sort with a couple of round bits on it - I don't know what to do. She seems to be trying to either poo or lay an egg but whatever it is she hasn't done either.

I came home around 11.30am and saw it then, it is still there. She has been eating and drinking and seems happy enough.

Any advice gratefully received.

Hello,

Just back from the vet. He pushed the prolapse vent back in and said that it could happen again. It has, we have just arrived back and before I put her in with the other girls I checked her and it has come back out - now the dilema, what to do? I am probably being heartless by saying that this visit to the vet cost 18 pounds and he said that he could put her under and put a stitch in - but can I really justify that?

Am I being really bad at thinking like that? I don't know what to do. If it has come out so easily it will do it all the time and I'm not around during the day to keep an eye on her.

When I looked in on her before I left for work she seemed fine although a little subdued but she had been eating and drinking.

I've spoken to the vet this morning and he said that to have a stitch put it it will cost between £20 and £30 although he said this may not be successful. I don't know what to do - the soonest I can get her to the vet is Friday morning - will she be okay until then? Should I try and put it back in myself - I haven't done it before and I wouldn't want not to do it correctly.

Any advice is appreciated - I know ultimately the decision is mine but should I let her go now or try and have the op first?

Oooo, tricky one :?

What about making sure that the prolapse is clean and putting some preperation H cream or similar on it and then trying to put it back in.

Once you have got it in-keep the palm of your hand over the vent for as long as you can-just to give things a good chance of staying in. (30 mins +)

I would then keep her in a box for a good few days, maybe even a week and pray that it stays in.

If it does end up needing a stitch-it's your call. I have no idea what I would do to be honest.

I think I would have to have a go at getting it to stay in and then decide what to do if it didn't work.

Please keep us updated :)

I have to say that I would have her PTS. We have had one of our chickens back and forth to the vets and it has cost quite a bit so I am not saying that she should be put to sleep due to financial reasons. We made the decision very early on that if one of our girls had something wrong that could reoccur and would cause them suffering (such as a prolapse) then we would have them PTS.

Sorry

I'm sorry to say that we had Lucy quail PTS this morning. I had separated her from the other two and although she was eating and drinking and what seemed to be in good spirits I knew deep down that as the problem was recurring it wasn't fair on her. So when I went to the vet this morning she advised that it would be best to let her go.

I didn't think I would be as emotional as I was - I think when it came to it, it was a bit of a shock and the vet and the receptionist/part-time nurse were fantastic - but when I then had to sign the piece of paper consenting to put Lucy to sleep I found that so difficult.

Thank you, everyone, for your support and advice, I very much appreciated it.

Sorry :(

The best decision IMO ... especially with such a small bird.

have to agree but very sad all the same but i think it was the kindest thing xxxx

As sad as it is-sometimes we just have to make these decisions.

Quail are such small birds and I think that you have made the right choice. It would have been very costly as well as very stressful for the bird to keep going back and forth to the vet and for her to have surgery etc.

You take care and I hope that you are feeling better and brighter today :D
