MrsP
Have been preparing house and husband for the arrival of some feathery friends and now that he has cracked and accepted it's going to happen I am dithering about which Eglu to buy... Any advise please on the difference between the Clasic and the Go? (am planning on 3 hens)
Space Chick
Personally I prefer the Classic, as it has a separate pop hole for accessing the eggs, rather than taking the whole back off and risking escaping chickens when all you want is an Omelette
rachael_farnsworth
From what I can see, the Go is self-assembly whereas the classic is moulded plastic so it just slots together, and the Go has one access door plus the option to have the run door on the side of the run or the front. Speaking only for myself, I think the £30 extra for the Classic is probably worth it.
MrsP
Thanks for the replies! Will have to stop dithering soon and press the buy button. Do you think I will need the run extension if I am going to have 3 hens? They will be in the run most of the time as I work fulltime... Also, are the perches wooden or plastic and should I buy spares... I am a worrier, I want to get it right
Christian
Well if you wanted the run extension, that makes the decision easy. The Eglu Go doesn't have a extension yet! You would need the convertor to add an extra metre of run space, making the classic run 3m long - loads of room for 3 hens. All the roosting bars are now plastic....no need for spares, as they wipe clean. The wooden bars get more wear and tear and I have a couple of sets, but not an issue with the plastic ones
Jemima13
Hi Mrs P, I was in exactly the same dilemma and I eventually decided on the 'Go' to save a bit of money and it seemed a pretty cool design and I liked that it had one access door as we are putting it in a WIR so would only need one access hatch at the back. Then it arrived, (After counting down the days like an excited child!) I opened the box and demanded that my husband help me build it immediately! We did and I was a bit disappointed. I hadn't seen one in real life before, but had seen a classic eglu. I found the 'Go' plastic to be of less quality and a bit cheap looking and not as sturdy as the classic. And the pull out tray is a bit more awkward to get out compared to the classic, it being bigger. So, after much dithering, phoned omlet and swapped it for a classic. And now I am very happy. That's just what I thought though, other people love the 'Go'. What I really needed was to see both in the same place and decide, but this wasn't possible. Hope this helps! MrsP
Thanks Jemima, that is v helpful. Like you I haven't seen either of them in the flesh so am just relying on pics on the website. Looks like most people prefer the Classic so I think I will go with that, my next dilema is the size of the run... husband is not keen on the whole chicken thing so have only been allowed a small area of the garden, looks like I will have to restrict myself to 2 girls rather than the 3 I was planning! abwsco
I've a Go in a WIR bought when it was cheaper and free delivery (hadn't seen a classic). We're pleased with it but it's not used as a main house although I've got one back in solitary in it again as from yesterday Having recently seen a Classic I'd go for that instead of the Go. I find the nest box area of the Go is too shallow and mine end up laying on the plastic as they must move around a lot and kick the bedding out. Also I think the depth between the roosting bars and tray are not as deep. Mine must sleep in the same spot and the poo is sticking up between the roosting bars after a couple of days. Mind you the one in there does massive poos at times!
Chook n Boo Mum
Hi MrsP *waves* If you are going to go for the Classic with 3 hens ( a good number so that in the unhappy event that one of the girls pops off to the Big WIR in the Sky you don't have one lonely chook ) I would firmly recommend a converter to add an extra metre to the run...the more space you can add for them to tootle around in during the day when they cannot FR the better You could always go for bantams rather than "proper" sized hens, they take up much less space...I had 5 Pekins who all slept in the nestbox of the Classic, leaving loads of space for my Araucana x Pekin girly to sleep in Good luck with your decisions Sha x
MrsP
Right, Classic it is then and an extension to accommodate the 3rd feathered inmate! Hmm, will have to re-measure the area to check that I have enough room for the extension.... Got a horrible feeling I have 3mtrs max to include the house, think that will only be long enough to accommodate the Classic and standard run...? Cant wait to get home and check it out, work is such a drag, really messes with your life!
Chook n Boo Mum
The other alternative if space is very tight with the converter as well.......build them a 3m WIR in the designated space The length would be fine and the extra height with a few perches, logs etc would give them oodles of space to escape from each other should the need arise. The Classic could live inside the WIR & you wouldn't need to order any of the runs with it............or am I jumping the gun here & scaring your hubby completely BTW I'm sure I'm only saying what everyone else is thinking Sha x
MrsP
I have a horrible feeling that you are all going to be a very bad influence.... I fear the worst! I'm sure a WIR (just realised what that means by the way ) would be the ideal solution but would never get it passed by hubby, he would have a coronory if he came home to find one of those in the garden! Think am going to have to mull this over a little more before taking the plunge... Thanks for the advise, is a great forum and i will no doubt be back for further guidance/encouragment
Chook n Boo Mum
I have a horrible feeling that you are all going to be a very bad influence.... I fear the worst! Bad influence ..............never ....we just give you the benefit of our experience.........you get to learn from our mistakes ......the main one being the discovery 3 weeks down the line that a WIR would have been the best decision at the outset Good luck with the convincing of your DH Sha x
