[Minnie&Moose]

Minnie, one of our original Omlet girls, was put to sleep this morning. She arrived Mar 08, laid like a trouper until Nov 09, moulted, and then seemed to age suddenly, becoming slower and more sleepy by the day. But, she maintained her position of 2nd in command right up to the end, and even saw off the cat yesterday as he attempted to share her breakfast! Although she was still doing 'chickeny' things it just didn't seem fair to let her keep going. She was finding it increasingly difficult to get up the steps of the cube, and would get knocked over in the rush for the gate when we let them out in the morning - though that didn't stop her seeing off those beneath her in the pecking order if they tried to muscle in on her share of the treats. It's going to seem very strange out in the garden for a while until we get used to only being mobbed by 4 rather than 5 chickens

Many thanks for all your replies. Not looking forward to breaking the news to my 9 year old whose chicken she was - feels mean to tell him this evening when he comes in all cheery from supper at a friend's house - but I guess it's better that way rather than risking him going to let them out first thing tomorrow before we're up, and finding her missing
