urgent help please - my hen is being sick!

Recommended Posts

ive notice that one of my hens has been a bit off colour for a few days. She hasn't been eating much and has been a bit slow on her feet. This morning i woke them up and noticed that her crop was massive. Ive just taken her out of the eglu to examine her and she has been sick all over the place. Ive tried to empty her crop by gently squeezing it upwards and she doesn't seem to want to be sick anymore but her crop is still quite big. Im going to try the live yoghurt but im scared to feed her anything! Ive also got some live maggots - should i give these a go with the yoghurt? or is there anything else i can do?

thanks for your help! :anxious:

thanks for the replies - i have made her sick again, i dont think there is anything left - a grape came up and lots of seeds. The sick is watery yellow and smells so bad! I have given her a bit of yoghurt with some live maggotts which she has eaten, and she has had a bit of water. Do you think i need to keep her in tonight or put her back with her mates? thanks again! (i never thought i'd have to make a hen sick - the things you do for love!)

Sorry the reply is a bit late :-)

I'd keep her in, but if she's asleep now, I wouldn't disturb her. The subject of Grapes being bad for hens has been on this forum recently. I've not fed any to mine, but apparently they could be toxic to hens.

Helping hens be 'icky is just one of the fun things we have to do :P

Hi thanks for asking about her, she is like a different chicken now, i really cant believe the difference, she has a spring in her step again already.

She is getting live natural yoghurt, daktarin gel and maggots a few times a day and gobbling this down, i will carry on with this for a few more days. This morning she came charging out of the eglu at 100mph with the others to get to their breakfast - she hasn't done this for nearly a week. I am so happy to see her getting back to normal! Her poos are still very watery, but i have seen some maggots in her poos so i know they are getting through and there isn't a big blockage inside her. And the really good thing is that her crop feels completely normal and there has been no more sick :vom:

Sounds like sour crop to me.. keep some ACV in the water and feed her on Bokashi Bran in live yoghurt once a week and you shouldn't get it back.

Please don't try this at home though, or take care if trying to drain a hen's soured crop - they don't have a gag reflex, so can easily inhale the liquid.
