help please-chook under the weather

Recommended Posts

Noticed lady Jane was rather listless and not very active at all yesterday, also didn't lay yesterday. :( She had got back into lay a couple of weeeks ago after I realised that she had lice and was very unhappy, but she went back to normal after treatment.

I thought she might have an impacted egg although I couldn't feel anything, and cleaned up her rear end which had poo clogging the feahters (that only happened yesterday, she was clean prior to then) and syringed in a small amount of olive oil. Kept her indoors in a pet cage lined with newspaper. She ate a little bit this morning but I noticed there wasn't much poo at all in the cage from overnight (and no egg). I have left her in the cage today as well.

Question: if they are egg-bound, would that also be blocking the exit for the poo so to speak?

How long can it take them to pass an impacted egg and should I be doing anything more pro-active?

She is on newspaper (not shredded) in the cage--is this OK or should I give her proper bedding? There are no perches in the cage.

Thanks for your help!

PS she has also had red, rough bald patches on either side of her neck for weeks and weeks now---they look sore but not bleeding, and don't seem to change at all, not getting bigger but not growing new feathers--any suggestions??

Id take her to the vet as she can be checked over.I did have an egg bound hen l held her in the bath of warm water for about 20 minutes talking to her and when l lifed her out she passed the egg in the towel she had been standing very wide if you know what l mean and looking fed up.Ive been lucky its not happened since.Good luck for your little girl hope you manage to get her sorted soon.

Details about egg bound hens can be found **here** -returning to the nest is a common sign that they want to lay but can't.

The bald patches could be a sign of mites, so check her carefully and give her a (gentle) dusting with lice/mite powder - repeat after 7 days to catch any eggs that might have hatched.

If she is no better today a trip to the vet would be my advice. Pooing little could be a sign of an egg stuck, but it could just be that she hasn't eaten much. If it is a soft shelled egg, these are difficult to pass as there is nothing to 'push' against - the warm water will help relax her.

Hope she is better soon. :D
