EileenH
Well, I have two chickens at the moment, two years old, and I want to increase to four. Now then, how about this scenario -- 1) Buy a cube & run and two p.o.l. from Omlet and set up next to the eglu. 2) Let the two new birds out in the cube run and let the two oldies freerange around it. 3) Do all the introducing activities as suggested on this forum. 4) introduce the oldies into the cube. 5) (Essential!) Sell the eglu etc. What do you think?
tara
Sounds like a good idea to me it took mine about a month to get together there were still swabbles but very few good luck with your introductions let us know how it gose.Im getting some ex bats and wish it was as simple
brambles
That's just what I did. I forgot to sell the original eglu though and then used it to introduce two more girls. forgot to sell original eglu after that introduction and now it's waiting for a broody so I can hatch eggs... Busybird
Sounds like an excellent 4 point plan (that last point doesn't really need to be there does it ). Getting new girls is so exciting and you will enjoy it so much more if you have good housing for both 'flocks' and don't have to rush the introductions
EileenH
Thanks for the points - well taken. I shall now start saving up for a cube. I don`t have room to keep both cube and eglu permanently and I shall really need to sell eglu anyway - cubes are a bit pricey! Do they sell all right second hand? Busybird
I bought my cube second hand and felt very lucky to be able to pick one up quickly and locally. I love my set up now - I have a cube and an eglu side by side and have done two sets of introductions this way. My first introductions were done with just the eglu, a cat carrier and a bamboo cane divided run. That was rushed and stressful. Having adequate run and housing space for all the girlies, new and old, has made it enjoyable
Daphne
Remember it is always useful to have a spare somewhere (doesn't have to be an eglu tho!) to use as a sick-bay/broody house/separate accommodation for introductions. A small wooden house/ark would suffice, even a rabbit house & run if secure. We went from 2 to 7 in the early days - best move ever!
Snoxy
Hi Eileen We have 10 girls now and like Brambles...I 'forgot' to sell my Eglu...that was 8 chickens ago...although DH is to blame for that...each time I got over the 'broody' feeling he said...before we sell the Eglu let's just get another couple of girls It has been great for introducing new girls...I keep them in the Eglu and run for at least two weeks...introduce them at night to the others in the hen house and let them free-range from then on in...it has worked very well so far. Our most recent girls...Robyn and Daphne...have now been free-ranging and roosting with the established girls for a week and I have had very little trouble...in fact virtually none from 7 of the girls...Mildred the Menace has been up to her usual bullying though A water sprayer or two has been very useful and a couple of days in the Eglu and run for Mildred have sorted her thankfully I am now considering keeping the Eglu to house our rabbit with the view I will eventually sell it when our dear little rabbit has met her maker Our girls all live in a converted plastic shed although a Cube was my first choice until DH convinced me otherwise Good luck
EileenH
Thank you! It all sounds lovely. If I had a bigger back garden I`m sure I would extend and extend - - - however .
