orp_lover
Ok, so we've had our Bluebelle and Calder Ranger for a few days now and I need to ask a few questions regarding looking after them. 1.) What time should we shut them in at night and let them out in the morning? 2.) Is it ok to take away their water overnight? 3.) How effective is Verm X drinking solution? This is the third day we've used it as a double dose and our Bluebelle seems to have perked up a bit Or is it better to get the wormer from the vet beginning with the letter F (not sure what it's called now) 4.) They are about 16 weeks old now. When will they start to lay, approximately? 5.) Should we be using ACV as a tonic and garlic powder to control the smelly poop?! 6.) How good is Cozy Coop bedding? 7.) What can I use as an alternative for a dust bath? Should we put anti-mite powder which is suitable to use on chickens in there? 8.) What is best to use to deter flies? We noticed a few blue bottles flying aroud them yesterday. Our rabbit died a few years ago as a result of fly strike and it's an awful thing to have to watch. I'm sure there'll be a few more questions to come, but this is probably more than enough for starters! Cheers folks
squidsin
As a veteran of a month's chicken keeping, I asked nearly all those questions when I got mine! So: 1) I let them out at 6.30/7ish when I get up, and shut them in after they've put themselves to bed. 2) Yes 3) Not sure about that one. I've wormed mine with Verm X as well 4) Mine still haven't! 5) I use the garlic powder and that Bokashi stuff and have been surprised at how un-smelly their poo is 6) No idea, I use bark chippings as I only cover my run when it rains 7) I think you can stick in a tray full of earth, but mine have made their own in the coop anyway and in my flowerbeds when they FR so I haven't bothered. You can put anti-mite powder in dust baths (apparently, although I grabbed mine and did it that way) I got some citronella oil which I sprinkle into the run - it's powerful stuff and seems to do the job. I like the smell, flies (and cats) don't! Hope that helps!
sjp
Ok, so we've had our Bluebelle and Calder Ranger for a few days now and I need to ask a few questions regarding looking after them. 1.) What time should we shut them in at night and let them out in the morning? If you live in build up area not before 7 am lock up after they've gone to bed 2.) Is it ok to take away their water overnight? yes 3.) How effective is Verm X drinking solution? This is the third day we've used it as a double dose and our Bluebelle seems to have perked up a bit Or is it better to get the wormer from the vet beginning with the letter F (not sure what it's called now) the only liecenced poulty wormer is Flubenvet 4.) They are about 16 weeks old now. When will they start to lay, approximately? about 20 weeks 5.) Should we be using ACV as a tonic and garlic powder to control the smelly poop?! you don't have to but it helps 6.) How good is Cozy Coop bedding? dont know it but I use Bliss 7.) What can I use as an alternative for a dust bath? Should we put anti-mite powder which is suitable to use on chickens in there? playpit sand. I use spent potting compost ti which Iadd diatom and Barrier Louse powder 8.) What is best to use to deter flies? We noticed a few blue bottles flying aroud them yesterday. Our rabbit died a few years ago as a result of fly strike and it's an awful thing to have to watch. Redwing
Ok, so we've had our Bluebelle and Calder Ranger for a few days now and I need to ask a few questions regarding looking after them. 1.) What time should we shut them in at night and let them out in the morning? After dark and let them out before about 7:302.) Is it ok to take away their water overnight? 3.) How effective is Verm X drinking solution? This is the third day we've used it as a double dose and our Bluebelle seems to have perked up a bit Or is it better to get the wormer from the vet beginning with the letter F (not sure what it's called now) Flubenvet, Verm X is more of a natural preventative 4.) They are about 16 weeks old now. When will they start to lay, approximately? Probably sometime after 20 weeks and before about 25 but can take up to 30 weeks 5.) Should we be using ACV as a tonic and garlic powder to control the smelly poop?! Garlic and ACV are both useful but not absolutely necessary. I use ACV but not Garlic powder6.) How good is Cozy Coop bedding? its not great, I prefer Aubiose or wood shavings in the coop 7.) What can I use as an alternative for a dust bath? Should we put anti-mite powder which is suitable to use on chickens in there? Dry compost or garden soil is good, Diatom is a useful powder to have and can also be used in the coop as a red mite preventative 8.) What is best to use to deter flies? We noticed a few blue bottles flying aroud them yesterday. Our rabbit died a few years ago as a result of fly strike and it's an awful thing to have to watch. Citronella oil - some people spray a diluted solution over the run fllor or on to hanging rags or dusters to keep flies away. A red top fly trap placed elsewhere in the garden is very wise (these smell so dont put it by the patio!) I'm sure there'll be a few more questions to come, but this is probably more than enough for starters! Cheers folks
chickyhazel
At this time of year, you could leave the house door open as long as they have a run. This means you should leave water out. We always use Flubenvet and I recommend it. Some of ours started to lay at 15-16 weeks, others more like 30. It depends on the chicken and the breed. For instance, we have been told that Black Rocks come into lay earlier than other breeds, at about 15-16 weeks. We use garlic powder and it's great - no problems with smell. We just use shredded paper bedding and the chickens are fine with it as long as it is softish paper. Our dust baths were sand filled, but the chickens preferred to just dig holes in the soil so we removed the sand dust bath. They now make their own and love them. We have brought fly and wasp traps but they aren't near the chicken run. Citronella oil is recommended by loads of people, but we haven't had a problem really so just have the traps. Mollie333
1.) put them away at night around 8:30, wake up about 6-8:00am, anytime to suit you 2.) i take my water away, they dont drink or eat at night, they sleep. 3.) i use verm x, its ok and works, or you can get flubenvet, which is effective, also. 4.) when they are around 22 weeks. 5.) i dont use any, if youve only just got the birds, the poo calms down, when theyve settled in. 6.) my hens ate the bedding. 7.) soil, sand and anti mite powder works a treat for my girls. 8.) sorry about your rabbit! Citronella candels work a treat, or if you have alot of headges spray down with hot and soapy water.
