Chucky Mama
It appears that there are a few tortoise owners on the forum so I thought it would be nice to start a tortoise diary of their exploits (the tortoises not their owners ). So, here goes.. Kevin is my spur thighed tortoise and his is about 40. Had to come in for a few evening because it was so cold last week and he buried himself. Warmed him up with a heat lamp and got him eating again. 1/2 a curly lettuce and a chunk on cucumber. Back out today and whilst not warm enough for him to sunbathe yet he is happily stalking thistles leaves to eat. Lavenders_Blue
Great idea Chucky Mama! It will be nice to have a tortoise chat thread all of our own Flash is our family tortoise, we have had him for over 30 years which means he has been in the family longer than me I'm not sure what sort of tortoise he is, except that he is a mediterranean type. He was bought in the days when it was still legal to import tortoises so we have no idea of his age. He was fully grown when we got him. He lives free range in the garden and is pretty much as wild as the day he came to us. He goes crazy if he is brought inside to warm up and charges at the door. He still hisses when you get close to him so I wouldn't exactly say he was tame Flash is a master escapologist and, despite knowing his capabilities and tortoise-proofing the garden accordingly, he still manages to get out at some point most years - usually through an open gate which only has to be left open for 2 minutes for him to dash through. For this reason he has his address painted on his shell! Over the many years we have had him, during his escapes he has been found IN the pub up the road, brought back in a bicycle basket, brought back in an AA van, found 1/4 mile up the road in the town centre (indulging in some retail therapy no doubt) amongst other jaunts. I will have to take a photo of him and post it on here for you all.

Chucky Mama
We had a knock on the door from a neighbour last week who had spotted Kevin making a bid for freedom and heading towards the road. He had enlisted the help of the chickens again and had dug a huge hole next to the fence in the front garden Naughty Kevin It's not as if we have a small garden He was very cross when we bought him home and when we put him in the kitchen to make him a salad for his lunch before putting him back in the garden he made a very dirty protest all over the floor . Naughty Kevin and I will be having words with the chickens too
dannablue
I love the stories and the pics..naughty Kev! Can I ask how easy a tortoise is to look after? Was just wondering if they have to have lots of supplements and special requirements? Am really interested in them and would love to have one. Hope you dont mind me asking. Chucky Mama
Kev is an old well established chap. He lives free range in our garden. We worm him twice a year and feed him when we find him, otherwise he is pretty self sufficient. Our garden is large however and there is plenty for him to find to eat. The only time he is more work in the preperation for hibernation and dealing with him when he wakes up...and escapes
Seagazer
Kevin sounds like a complete character I can't wait for Jeffery to be old enough to stay in the garden, we get through so many of the light bulbs
