Jools
Lovely photo and lovely chicks I don't want to disappoint you, but the top two aren't Copper Black (or Copper Blue or Cuckoo) Marans, as they hatch black or very dark grey. I wonder if they're Wheaten Marans - I haven't had the pleasure of those yet!
meezers
That wasn't too hard was it ? They are all gorgeous, but I especially love the little TNN- didn't realise their little bald necks were quite so bald from hatch . Can we see a picture of her side on ( pretty please ) promise I won't laugh Think I may have to add TNN to my list of wants.

I wonder if they're Wheaten Marans - I haven't had the pleasure of those yet! I got them from the Domestic Fowl Trust as copper blacks but I'm not disapointed they have got feathered legs through I need to check which is which the big one in the middle is a maran defo it's the RIR that dosen't look right to me I thourght they were all one colour until they feather up That wasn't too hard was it ? They are all gorgeous, but I especially love the little TNN- didn't realise their little bald necks were quite so bald from hatch . Can we see a picture of her side on ( pretty please ) promise I won't laugh Think I may have to add TNN to my list of wants. it's on the list to do more photos once the last egg has hatched or been rejected not hard but Faith was none to pleased at been turfed out at 5:50am so I could take a photo the TNN has 1odd feather on it's neck I love TNN chicks must admit it's rarther cute it's got that Lurch look P.S. thanks for the comments and advise
Jools
The DFT don't have the best reputation in the world according to what I've read on different forums over the past few years (including this one). Someone here has hatched Wheaten Marans, so hopefully they'll see this and comment. I did wonder when you said one was a Rhode because I thought they hatched yellow-ish rather than marked. However, my memory isn't that precise from two years ago so I've dug these two photos out. The first it at hatch and the second approx one week later - hope it helps. sjp
now they look like RIRs by the way the top one is the RIR the egg I'm waiting on is a RIR to not to fussed about the Marans as I brought them based on the ones in the pen not for the fact that they were Copper Blacks or for really dark eggs and if they turn out to be boys them I grow them on as meat birds
sjp
side view TNN 2 days old hatched 22/6/2010 Front view TNN 2 days old back shot RIR 3 days old hatched 21/6/2010 Black Arancauna 3 days old hatched 21/6/2010 I did take more but the software to get the photos from the camara isn't reading them properly the thumbs are ok but when I try to copy them there are un-viewable, for every one good one 2 are s"Ooops, word censored!" sjp
final tally is 5 out of 6 eggs hatched the 6th was DIS wasn't quite full term but not far off it was the one that concerned me from the start has it was a bit 'dirty' but 5 out of 6 for a first go isn't bad in my book as the 2 'maran' eggs might not have been fertile the place I got them from hadn't hatched any and I took a flier on them

sjp
I've found this tonight looks like the RIR is blind in the right eye I think it's a birth defect comments welcome it's not holding it back in any way left eye right eye
meezers
Aw, shame about the blind chick, but if it doesn't know any different I guess it will be ok. Lovely photos, and the little TNN is so sweet.
penelope
Hi Faith Have you seen it open its eye at all as the photo is shoing it shut. I was wondering if it has something glueing the lids together when it hatched. I hope you get some anwswers from the others.
Griffin
Those are my French Wheaten Marans chicks, all came out pale yellow. I'm wondering if yours are Gold Brahmas? They'd have feathered legs and the same colouring as yours. Here's one of my Gold Brahmas:
Egluntyne
Difficult to tell because of the angle of the photo, but the eye appears to be swollen or bulging in addition to being closed. Might be worth asking a vet to have a look see, in case there is something a bit more serious going on.
