stehaggan
Hi I was just wondering if anyone has built a fox proof run and just keeps the eglu door open at night rather than closing them in and having to let them out? If you have, can i ask what you do in the winter, i.e. do the chickens not freeze if the door is open all the time? Any info would be useful thanks. Olly
Yes, that's my set-up, and I hardly ever close the door. A couple of times this winter when it was extremely cold and/or snowing, I closed it to prevent snow blowing in, but generally I don't close it. The Eglu is raised up and in a sheltered position within the run, and they all snuggle up together and really don't seem bothered. I have had no problems with the hens, and I've always done this more or less since I first got them.
Redwing
I leave my Eglu doors open, I do use tarps and shades though to offer shelter and stop the worst of the wind, rain and snow blowing in

Ain't Nobody Here
I leave mine open too - the girls actually sleep on perches in the WIR anyway . They chose to sleep in the WIR even when we had snow not long ago and don't seem to mind the rain either . When they did choose to sleep in the eglu and the weather was really bad, I put a plastic backed picnic rug over the top of the eglu. atsw
I leave mine open too - the girls actually sleep on perches in the WIR anyway . SNAP! My two big girls have taken to sleeping perched on the back of the old bench in the WIR, leaving the completely empty overnight - still, saves having to clean it out all the time . Lewis
The ducks sleep in the run all the time, and the chickens used to go in the wendy house/Go but now sleep on the perches too
Cinnamon
Me too - my run is totally fox & rat proof - it is built on a deep concrete foundation. The Eglu & Cube sit outside,so its even easier to get too....see the little photo in my signature below I never ever close the doors on the Cube, but did tuck the Banteenies up in the Eglu during the snow this winter.
