Lyme Regis

Recommended Posts

Had to pick up DD from Exeter Uni today, so on the way back we decided to try out Lyme Regis...had lovely sandwiches from the Lyme Bay Sandwich Company (I think that is what it is called) and sat looking at the harbour in the sun...I'm sure it's awfully expensive to stay anywhere near, but we thought it was charming and well worth a visit if you are in that part of Dorset (also hard not to feel like Meryl Streep whilst walking out on the Cobb..!) :D

Ps it is definitely pricey...Mackerel fishing from the harbour for one hour £22...from Exmouth £10!!! But don't let that put you off..it's very pretty...

Also overheard whilst eating our sandwiches...

Father to small boy..." Well perhaps it would be better to do that on another day, not today"

Small boy..."yesterday?"

Bless!!!

Lyme Regis is lovely (out of season = less daytrippers!) but the best thing about it is the seafood van selling super fresh seafood. If you can find it I recommend the whelks.

Oh, and no way do you need to spend £22 mackerel fishing. All you need to do is beachcast off Chesil - you'll always catch some for the BBQ.

we've just come back from a few days in Dorset for my 40th birthday. We stayed in a little cottage in Bridport and went to Lyme, Weymouth and Axminster (to the river cottage canteen).

Lyme is beautiful but so hilly!!!! We had a lovely crab sandwich and walked along the prom to The Cobb and had a clotted cream ice cream sitting near the cobb.

We had a fabulous time.....

here's some pics :D

We stayed in a little cottage in Bridport

My Grandmum lives there 8)

Did you go to the biscuit factory?

Seatown is gorgeous too - a really lovely little beach with a cracking pub :P

We used to stay in West Bay for the summer when we were children, every year for 12 years,I think

didn't know about the biscuit factory but we did go to Leakers' Bakery (as seen on RC) and bought delish dorset apple cake and some Dorset K"Ooops, word censored!"s! (amongst other treats) :D

we packed quite a lot into a few days but there was so much more I wanted to see and do, we'll probably go back with the tent at some point.

So beautiful around there!

p.s. if you like your wine you have to visit the Lyme Bay winery,

http://www.lymebaywinery.co.uk/

there's a pic of the wines we bought towards the end of the photo album in my previous post.

If you like sweet dessert type wine then you'll love the apricot wine, i bought every bottle on display of the apricot wine  well, it's not like i can pop back and get more is it?:lol:

p.s. they let you taste anything you like, mmmmmmmmmmmmm, yes they do!

The factory is where they make the wondeful Dorset K"Ooops, word censored!"s - you can tour it (its tiny!), & then they have a shop where you can buy the broken biscuits too 8)

One of my Grandmums houses is opposite - I hope the factory is still there - its worth a visit if you go again :D

Great pics, looks like you had a fab time down here. The food at River Cottage is delish (though smakk portions for my liking  ).

it was tapas night, we had 4 plates of tapas to share (see the pic of the menu board for the details), plus bread and butter, chips and buttered greens. The pig's liver with lentils was incredible, I need to try and find the recipe on the net! We were well and truly stuffed afterwards :D

We have stayed at a couple of campsites not far from Lyme. One at Seatown called Golden cap and another run by the same company near Bridport called Highland's End. Both are pretty windy but have great views. Both also have static caravans. Golden cap is just up from the previously mentioned pub at Seatown which has a cliff top beer garden and used to serve good food, but we haven't been for a few years.

We saw the Red Arrows in Lyme a few years back, we only saw the beginning of their display because it was called off owing to bad weather, it tipped it down and went very misty, and my OH badly twisted his ankle on the way back to the car, which was a good excuse to have a couple of extra days camping, because he couldn't drive home.

Edited to add something about the Moore's Dorset Biscuit factory, it is on the main road into the area and the biscuits you buy from there are so much fresher than the ones you buy elsewhere, they rarely have broken ones these days though, we have had a few huge bags in the past and when you go in when they have been baking you sometimes get warm biscuits in baskets in the viewing gallery and the smell is fantastic.

Just found this thread whilst searching for something else. We were in Lme Regis just 2 weeks ago, it was wet and dull but lunched at the Harbour Inn, just across from the Lyme Bay Sandwich Co. Food was a little expensive but the quality was outstanding. Are there other venues that would accomodate a table of 10, where was the Fish Van though?
