patsylabrador
The vet's column in the Saturday Telegraph had a short piece about ritual slaughter. It's allowed in this country as you know but what I didn't know is that any meat left over from the religious market is 'sold, unlabelled, in general butchers'. Some people are ok with that, but I'm not. New labelling is being considered to inform consumers. I shall just continue to be very careful about where I buy my meat, but that's a luxury that some people don't have. He has a blog where he says he would welcome comments: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/author/peterwedderburn

Chucky Mama
This has been going on for years and as far as I am aware this happens with the parts of the carcass that are not used with both Halal and Kosher meat. With Kosher the hind quarters are not eaten by Kosher meat eaters but I am not sure if more is 'wasted' by Halal meat eaters. All of the remaining meat ends up in supermarkets and butchers. Charlottechicken
If it is slaughtered for a particular religion it should not be foisted onto other meat eaters Chucky Mama, I didn't realise that the whole animal wasn't used, that makes it even worse I really, really hope they label these products. kinsk
I heard about this last year and think it's absolutely disgusting. I only recently realised that they dont use the rear end of the animal as it's considered unclean! Personally I don't think these methods of slaughter should be allowed at all but to sneakily pass off the unwanted bits really isn't on. Looney
I have to admit I have never really considered ritual slaughter in any great depth. I lived in Bradford for a few years and was surrounded by shops (and restaurants) selling halal meat so I have eaten it knowingly. I think as has been said, this is about lack of information. If you know what you are eating and are happy with this then fine but not to be given the information to make the choice isn't really on
