fostec1
We had three chicks hatch last week, the youngest on Thursday. On Monday morning both his eyes were stuck shut with what looks like a clear sticky substance. I have cleaned them with boiled water each day but the problem does not seem to be clearing up. Any advice much appreciated! PS Thought you may enjoy ths picture of my other hens looking on in fascination!
Lewis
Great picture! I'd maybe speak to the vets and get some eye drops. I have heard of people using tea (cold with no milk ) and a cottom wool bud, but would be careful with eyes, and check that its not contageous. Redwing
I use Boots antibiotic eye drops on chooks with gunky eyes - even chicks, the magic ingredient is Chloramphenicol. Its NOT licenced for use on poultry in the UK though. A bit of artistic licence involving a poorly son and NHS direct is required to get it out of the pharmacist though
Egluntyne
Bathing with cold tea ( no milk, no sugar) can help in a mild infection, and is very soothing. Are you certain that there isn't a foreign body in the eye. If it is no better after the suggested treatments, I'd take it to a vet, as there might be a scratch on the surface of the eye. scarlettohara
You can buy Golden Eye over the counter which does the same job (I use it on the horses eyes in the Summer) but as Egluntyne says you should check it's not scratched.
fostec1
Thanks for all your advice. In the end we visited our frindly vet who gave us some cream for "sick chick". Starting to clear up - he's certainly eating well and flapping about so fingers crossed! Will post a pic of him when he's back to full health.
