My run is on london clay which at the moment is like concrete and in the winter will be like a bog. We regularly throw in a couple of bags of gravel, for drainage and it seems to help keep rats at bay, and top with horse bedding. At the moment I'm using elephant grass which feels a bit like woodchip.

Advice on this forum is to use garden lime and stalosan to keep the run smelling fresh and to stop the ground getting stale - both excellent ideas.

I also recently added bokashi bran to their feed which was recommended to reduce any smell - it works.

I think that a 'couple or 4 more' should be added to chicken maths

My WIR is on grass with a thick layer of bedmax, I poo pick every other day and it always looks clean, my run has a roof to keep it all dry.

Mine is on soil, with a fair bit of sand mixed in,as it used to be where my swimming pool was sited (see the photo in my signature)

I then use several bales of Aubiose on top, which they mix in.

The resulting mix of earth,Aubiose & poo is cleared out around 4 times a year & put on Freecyle, where we always get lots of takers!

My run has a brick base & concrete foundations,so that nothing can dig or burrow in 8)
