Do You Ever Get Too Many Eggs?

Recommended Posts

We are a family of five. When we had five hens, everyone kept saying when they were all laying we'd have far too many eggs.

Admittedly, they aren't all laying yet, but we've been getting 4 eggs from our 7 hens these last few days and at this moment in time on my egg skelter is one sorry egg. The kids had eggs, potato wedges and beans for tea = 7 eggs (admittedly some were first laid eggs, hence eldest son having three) and I made cookies this afternoon, so that's another two eggs. If they have eggs for breakfast they have two each, so that's half a dozen eggs in one go.

So, how many eggs do you eat and do you ever have too many?

eee, them were the days when we had too many eggs :roll: Seriously, when we have too many we sell the neighbourse & eat lots of eggy bread. If we visit friends for supper etc we take a box of eggs instead of chocolates and a bottle on wine. My son's primary school teacher used to buy them too.

I have 12 girls at the moment...watch this space tomorrow

One doesn't lay at all although she goes through the motions bless her, one lays eggs with bumpy bits on, one lays very thin-shelled eggs, four lay small eggs at the moment...it works quite well as we eat these eggs and I sell the others to friends...they are very popular as I sell a box of mixed colours...including light brown, white, dark green, pale green and pale blue and hopefully dark brown too

We had our best day ever today...10 eggs

I give them to the masseuse, chiropodist and hairdresser, and occasionally to the neighbours if I see them, which is rare. Tonight I took a box to a friend I don't see very often, her ex-husband used to keep hens and she really appreciates having fresh, garden eggs. For the first couple of years I used to give them to local friends, now I ask for a £1 charity donation.

And then there's poached egg, scrambled egg, omelettes, eggy bread, mayonnaise, hollandaise, salade Nicoise, egg sandwiches ... and the best sponge cakes ever. I've got 20 eggs in the egg-skelter at the moment, plus a huge one one on the side which is a double-yolker, I'm sure and that is marked for my breakfast on Saturday! 8)

Going back a couple of months I had so many eggs I was throwing them away, no one wanted any - I couldnt give them away! I incubated some, we ate some, the dog ate six a day and the rest went in the bin :(

Yes, I can see that someone with 113 chooks might have too many... Do you sell them too?

I just can't see that we will ever have too many. I am desperate to give some away to the neighbours, but at the moment that would mean me having to buy some for myself, which seems a little silly! One of my friends loves baking and she babysat two of my children for a couple of hours last week. I really wanted to give her half a dozen eggs as a thankyou, but didn't have enough. :(

I give my extras away to family and friends. Gradually more and more of them are making noises that they like the poland bantam eggs best but as these are also my favourites everyone else will have to wait in line!

Redwing - just a thought; do you think there might be mileage in giving them to a refuge/shelter/homeless meals service or even a care home or school? Or a fete or fundraiser of some sort and they keep the proceeds? I've no idea of any 'regulations' mind you, perhaps you have to be registered somehow.

On average I get roughly just over 60 chicken eggs on a good day. About half of these will be labeled and saved for hatching or selling for hatching and the rest are sold at mum or dad's work. I also get about 20 duck eggs a day too and these are also saved for hatching/selling for hatching or are eaten by us. No one seems to like to eat duck eggs!

No such thing as too many

We've wormed our girls last week so have an egg-skelter of Flubenvetted eggs :shock::shock: Hope it's OK to eat them a DH and I are slowly plugging our way through them,!

We get 5 a day but had a full house of 7 at the weekend  which is a surprise and the ex-barn girls are going through the henopause.

The eggs that the girls have laid this week are taken to work - I have back orders as everyone missed them when the girls were being wormed  I keep £1 from each sale and donate the excess to Little Hen Rescue - after their trailer overturned and lots of newly rescued chooks were injured :(

4 ex-batts + 3-4 eggs every day + only me and DH to eat them = lots of surplus eggs!

My mum and dad have half a doz every fortnight or so and we have 3 neighbours who buy them on a first come, first served basis. There is always more demand for eggs than supply - if only we had space for more hens! (We don't :( )

If you have a glut of eggs, you can freeze them. Beat them and then freeze them individually. In the winter when there are less eggs, they make lovely scrambled egg and omlettes. They are probably OK to include in baking, though I haven't tried this.
