More info on the eglu cube...

Recommended Posts

I like the look of it and the eglu itself is fab BUT why is the standard run so small if it is to house far more chooks than the mark2? The mk 2 run is 220cm, the standard mk 3 is 200- this seems a bit of an odd decision to me................

Still want one tho

I'm holding on to the Mark 2 Eglu, as expecting Cushion to climb a ladder to bed would be rather like getting your great-grannie up into a bunk bed. She is such an old lady: she goes into the Eglu every afternoon, even in lovely weather like today, to have a little lie down.

I am going to keep the Mark 2 as a retirement home, and the Mark 3 for my new younger hens.

It's 1.2 or 1.5m wide, whereas the normal run is 80cm. They say that cube with 2m run is only suitable for 8.

:think::think::think::think:

I wonder.........

If I bought the mark3 and 2 or 3 extensions, if my (red eglu) would fit in the corner of the new extended run....then I'd have room for 14-16 chickens! :D

:shock::shock: - and you were worrying about taking just three hens to your new house?:lol::lol::lol:

Excellent idea Shona - just hide them all down the side of the new house! 8)

I just miss my lovely girls so much, and spend my days now packing, and dreaming up ways to disguise the chicken run, and chickens at the new house!:lol::lol:

It's not 80cm though Martin as it widens out into a trpezium shape with a wider bit at the end.

The volume of the Mark 3 (without extensions) is very much greater than that of the Mark 2 (without extensions) because it is so much higher as well as wider. And there is a whole lot of extra space under the Eglu in the Mark 3 that obviously isn't available in the Mark 2.

Perhaps Martin (who will be better at volumes that most of us because he is still at school) could work out the exact outside volume of space available in each type of run.

And because the Mark 3 is so much higher, it will be possible to put at least three extensions on it before it looks out of proportion. (Any more than one on the Mark 2 Eglu, and it starts to look like a polytunnel.)

ok its basically two cuboids area under the eglu 0.5 X 1.2 x .85 = 0.51 m sq. (no idea how to do a squared sign)

and a regular 2 m run is 1.15 x 1.2 x 1.2 = 1.656 m sq.

add them together what do you get?

2.166 metres squared

I think

The total area of the standard Mark 2 run is 2.585m squared.

I worked it out by doing this: 0.5*2.35*2.2=2.585m squared.

The total area of the 2m run on the Mark 3 is 3.2 m squared.

I worked it out by doing this 1.6*2=3.2m squared.

The total area of the 2m run with an extension is 4.8 m squared.

I worked it out by doing this 1.6*3=4.8m squared.

I would like some more info on the new style feeder & drinker.

I phoned Omlet & Jan said they will be available for sale at the start of may, but if anyone gets there new cube before then can you post what they are like, please?

I like the look of the nipple drinker very much, but would like a first hand account :D

I think that the cubic area is more relevant than the floor area: they have so much more head-room in the Mark 3. They can't jump in the Mark 2 without bumping their heads.

But how you work out the cubic size of a halved cone with its pointed end missing beats me.
