Black RockStar
I know that officially it is ok for 10, but is 8 too many for a cube? I have a cube with the standard 2m run but have a 1m extension coming this week. I know a 3m run will be plenty of room for 8 chooks when we are out (we have a large garden to free-range in when we are home) but it is just the upstairs space I am worried about for 8? We have 6 ex-bats coming at the end of the month but would really like to take another 2 to help out! Your thoughts?
tom123
Sorry to say it but I wouldn't put 8 chickens in a 3m run. I would put 5 in there maximum. The house could probably fit 12 easily as they all squish together.
Roobaloo
I would be a little concerned about run space too...but If you were willing to invest in a bigger run later down the line, I think it would be fine as a temporary set up while they adjust! Egluntyne
I have a cube in a WIR with 14 hens in it and they all pile into the cube together . I did have an Eglu in the WIR too, but they just poo'd all over it, so I removed it. Run space would be the issue in your case. I would suggest that you have 2 extensions if you have the room. Lydia
Good on you for rescuing ex-batts. I agree with the others. I currently have 11 chickens in my cube but have had up to 13. They all fit in there fine at night. However, I allow at least 1m square per hen in the run area, so 3m for 8 chickens would not be suitable in my opinion. They will be fine temporary as it will be masses more space than they are used to. However, long term you would need a bigger secure run space to avoid issues with bullying, feather pecking etc.
Black RockStar
Ok thanks all, As i said, most of the time they would be free-ranging the garden. However, after the advice we will stick with rescuing 6 chooks for now. Thanks again
Black RockStar
Ok, So we took delivery of our 6 ex-bats on Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Nesbitt, Lulu, Marge, Dorothy, Valerie and Priscilla. Bless them, they are lovely. I had added a temporary ramp to the Cube ladder and two of them made it up first night. The others decided to cuddle up in the run so i put them up myself. On Sunday they all managed to go up and down several times during the day and had all put themselves to bed by 2100. Same tonight. They seem to have a routine already. They are eatng and drinking well and there combs are shrinking and turning red already. We have had 12 already! Will post some pictures soon
