scarlettohara
As some of you know I have 4 bantams - 9 week old wyandotte and three 6 week old pekins, they are together in the WIR partitioned from big girls (who totally ignore them ). The dotte is mum to the 1st frizzle but gives the new millefleur the occasional peck - nothing serious however she will not let the newer girls into the cat carrier at night. I have been going out and popping them in at the back once the dotte has settled. When I check again they are still there, have even put talc on them all to make them smell the same, should I perserve or get the newer pekins their own bed as I don't want them to get cold, they are all in the eglu and run during the day but stay in separate groups Edited August 2, 2010 by Guest
Redwing
I carry on with what you are doing, they will bond eventually One option is to remove the dotte just before bedtime and put her back once the others are all safely in Another would be to separate them for a few days - 1 existing with one newbie in each pair
scarlettohara
Thanks, I'll try those suggestions
Egluntyne
I'd try something a little stronger than talc. Maybe a couple of dabs each of Rive Gauche or Olbas Oil.

scarlettohara
The little grey/blue pekin (now called Puffin) is very quiet today - a bit hunched with eyes closed. I have emailed breeder who was very helpful (she did say it is like that with chicks - fine one day and not the next ) and suggested she may have got cold last night (I made sure she was in the cat carrier about 11.30). I have made her and her sister a mash and brought them into the shed in the dog crate with a cat basket and a soft teddy, she has eaten some mash and is cuddled upto the teddy but still look sleepy and lethargic. Any other advice welcome
scarlettohara
She is hardly moving this am, I have put her on a covered hot water bottle and syringed water into her beak but she won't eat. She is just lying down with her eyes closed - I feel such a failure with chicks
Tutti Frutti
Oh no I have no advice, just offering a bit of moral support and ((HUGS)) and keeping my fingers firmly crossed. Heartbreaking Hope she perks up soon
Egluntyne
How long has she been 'off heat'? Maybe she is struggling with being outdoors at night at her young age. See if she perks up when kept warm.
scarlettohara
She was outside at the breeders (friend of Redwing) in a run on grass but obviously with lots of others.
Redwing
I'm sorry to hear that Puffin isnt well i think you have done the right thing in bringing her in and giving her some fluids, a tiny drop of ribena in the water is apparently very good for getting them to drink more You could try nutridrops which are made by Nettex and are good Another option is to get her to a vet I have nutridrops so if you are still struggling with her later you would be welcome to pop her up and I will take a look - I wont be home till about 8pm though
scarlettohara
Thanks so much - I can get nutridrops locally I think - she is just lifeless really, I've renewed the hot water bottle. Do you think the vet could do anything ?
quickcluck
Oh you poor thing..... could you give her a bit of sugar water for a bit of energy?
scarlettohara
She has died, I just returned from getting the nutridrops and she had gone, the porcelaine was sitting on her but she looked really peaceful She was quite small so perhaps something inside wasn't quite right - I now have a lone chick (the other 2 haven't accepted her yet) - the breeder has offered me another one; shall I try again or give up
Redwing
If the breeder has offered you another I would take it It doesnt always go this way, you've had some terrible setbacks
scarlettohara
I know I feel like a complete rubbish chicken mummy, I've let Alma know and she has asked me to go and collect another one.
quickcluck
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. That's awful for you. You could be right and maybe she just wasn't meant for this world... I agree with Tasha you should get another to keep the other one company, choose a good sturdy active one!

scarlettohara
I went and collected another one this pm, although the porcelain has been really good on her own (only shouted for about 10 minutes ) but thought she deserved another little friend Came home with a very pretty little buff pekin, she has some black on her too but will only be millefleur if she acquires some white feathers otherwise could be splash. She settled in straight away - she is stuffing her face and even had a peck at a small cabbage leaf, Scout the porcelain jumped on her back and pecked her initially but now they are doing everything together - very sweet
hippy chick
So sorry to hear about your little chick. Don't be to hard on yourself, you have had some rotten luck lately but it's not your fault. Really glad that you have been and got another one.
