Her Legs Have Given Up!

Recommended Posts

I have a small Khaki Campbell called Magsy and I got home today to find she couldnt really walk at all and it seems her legs have just given up, she has always had a problem with walking but now she actually cant stand up! Has anyone had this with their ducks? What should I do? Do you think I should call a vet? Please help!

Hi Ems,

I'm sorry to hear about magsy. I had a similar problem with x2 of my campbells on x2 seperate occasions. The first time it happened she had a really bad limp and could hardly walk but then started to improve slightly as the days went on. She ended up making a full recovery so must have just strained a muscle/ligament. However, with the 2nd case a few months later (different duck) she was fine one day and shuffling about the next unable to walk. We took her to the vets and discovered she had a fractured leg and it was recommended she be put to sleep. I think an over enthusiastic drake was to blame on both occasions. I would take her to the vets to get checked over. Fingers crossed it will just be a strain of some sort.

Hi

Probably one of the most common problems in domestic ducks are leg injury, have you checked her for corns etc on the feet. Try to rest her on some shavings and within sight of others . You could take the duck to the vet but they can be difficult to treat successfully.

See how the duck is after a couple of days peace and quiet and decide what to do next ie vet or experienced person to cull for you if you are not happy to do this.

good luck Donald
