Unsecure chicken perches

Hi, I got back from shopping to find one of my hens dead.

She was fine when I left. I picked her up and noticed blood around her back end and something protruding out of where I'm guessing the eggs come from..(sorry don't know any official terms!)

does this sound like something that just happens??? I have heard of hens laying too much and mine do an egg everyday since they started last june..not one day off...I know this sounds lame but I just want to know if this is, although sad, what happens sometimes or should I be worried about my other two aswell?

 

any ideas???

so sorry to hear this, and it's an awful shock when you suddenly find one dead in the run - it's happened to me.

 

It sounds as if she had a prolapse -it's when the muscles around the vent weaken, sometimes after laying a very big egg, and a bit of intestine protrudes outwards. It just happens sometimes, and if you catch it then it can be replaced (not always successfully) but if you are not around to see it, it's often too late.

 

It's possible for this to happen to any hen, but it's not particularly more likely to happen to your other hens, so don't be too worried.

Yes after having a look about the forum it looks like this has happened...poor girl she was only 16months.

I don't think she has laid for days we thought it was one of the other girls but maybe she be straining too much. well it must have been quick poor hen.

Aww im so sorry about your little hen Its such a shame when this happens, one of mine had a prolapse when trying to lay her first egg! We even managed to get her to the vets, but she couldnt be saved.

I'm sorry , I also had one who prolapsed with first egg. I was lucky to be there and had lots of help from the forum but if I hadn't been there it would have ended like yours. She eventually recovered but unfortunately dropped dead some months later. You just don't know when something is going to strike.
