Has my Willow got something wrong with her?

Recommended Posts

My white star willow has been acting quite strange, shes not eating corn, or anything really. She seems as if she is constantly asleep and has just put herself to bed in the cub and is asleep. i mean fast asleep, Cherry was like this and died. im starting to wonder if willow will die too and if i am doing something wrong? really worried about her, also have only been getting one white egg which could also mean shes might but is most proabably not laying, thanks in advance for any advice xx

Hi, she is in the eglu next to me now! i have given her some mash - dont have any poultry spice, anything else i could give her that does the same? what about a garlic clove in her water? she is sitting on the side of the nesting box asleep, not even waking when i call her name, finger lickin good did your hen lay while she was acting like this? also have noticed some saliva dripping from her beak? will do a health check on her now and let you know if i find anything xx

Has she got the sniffles or a rattly chest? IS the eye gunky? If so I'd be thinking she might have mycoplasma and would need to see a vet.

Could be that the eye is injured and she is in pain. I'd bathe it with lukewarm tea or a saline solution and have a good look at it.

Is the dribbley stuff coming from her nostrils or beak?

If it's her nostrils, she could as previously mentioned have myco? Myco is treatable with an antibiotic that is added to the drinking water.

If the dribbley stuff is coming from her beak, I would have a feel of her crop. If it's soft and feels like a saggy water balloon, she could have sour crop. There's plenty of information on sour crop within the 'chicken clinc section' on how you can help her.

Good luck, let us know what you find.

Hi, on closer inspection around the eye are some little yellow bugs, they look like they are trying to get into her eye and thats why shes got it shut, vent, legs and comb are beautiful and her nose has a little bit of clear liquid, shes not coughing or sneezing much, she does now and again but my others do that, she has had two pecks at her food so that seems to be okay, any advice on what could be up? p.s i did try and open her eye but she wouldnt let me, she either is squeezing it closed or she cant open it, thanks in advance

I would think the 'little yellow bugs' are dried matter from her eye and she probably has an eye infection which needs antibiotics. Even if you think she is only coughing/sneezing a little she is probably getting a cold (your others too if they are doing the same) and quick treatment from a vet is important.

I have no idea as to how you tell definatively whether it's myco. They generally have a runny nose and rattley breathing and often bubbly eyes.

Tylan is used to treat myco. If you call the vets, explain the symptoms and request tylan, they may well give you some (mine did!)

I guess, all you can do until morning is keep offering food and water, keep her warm and cosy and keep a close eye on her.

Hi all, this morning Willow seems to be perky, she has eaten nearly all of her yoguhrt (small dish full) and is drinking. Her crop seems to be deflated, is that good? although her eye is still shut, i cant seem to work that one out, if i cant open it do i leave it? do i try again with water etc? to try and get it open but she wasnt happy with that? i sprayed some anti-pek spray on them all yesterday im worried that ive got it in her eye by accident? any advice? xx

Hi all, okay got an update. Willow is outside in the eglu now as we have got the run sorted, she has been on garlic powder, natural yoghurt and water for well over 24hours.

The issue with the sour crop is, she tries to be sick (when i squeeze it) and nothing comes out, still a bit of a runny nose but nothing compared to yesterday. When i squeeze her crop it still feels like a soft squishy balloon, also i can feel pellets in there, does that mean that her symptoms are deffo sour crop? i mean for well over 24hours she hasnt eaten pellets and i can still feel them? surely thats not normal?

For the issue with her eye, well its been half open, and closed all day, it looks very sore but the vet advised if no puss, crusty bits or liquid coming out that he doesnt need to see her, he told me to bathe it with tea at least once an hour and do this for a few days to see if it seems to ease anything and she can open her eye fully. He thinks i have caught it early enough to kill an infection in it, but yesterday she couldnt open her eye now she can half open it! fingers crossed the tea soothes it overnight and she may feel comfortable to open it a bit more after tommorrow mornings dose! btw i cant see any cloudiness in the eye it seems clear and of normal colour but looks very red and sore

let me know what you think to the update and wether those pellets should be in there by now?!? i mean the amount they poo id expect it to be "out" the same day!

As for now she is asleep in her hospital wing, i really cannot thank everyone enough for suggestions, comments and help, i really wouldnt know what i would do without Omlet!!! i
