I'm rehoming my silkies

Recommended Posts

The silkies have never really integrated with my pekins, and to be honest I've never taken to them in the same way. So, I have found them a marvellous new home. And it truly is marvellous, with lots of other birds and space. So why am I having a wobble? :( I know that they will have a better life in many ways in the new place, and with an owner who actually adores the breed. I think perhaps I just feel guilty at taking on birds and then rehoming them at all, to be honest. Has anyone else rehomed birds? And did it work out for the best?

I'm rehoming my Gold Laced Wyandotte cockerel to someone, for the best, we don't have the things he will be happy with. Its good that you are re homing really, because its for the birds. My silkies never did get into the flock very much, and they actually both died! :(

Peggy got attacked by the fox because she had bad eyesight and Pat had a disease. In my honest opinion, i don't like Silkies, they are nice to look at, but because of there hairdo's get prone to bullying and some which have bad breeding catch diseases much too quick.

Whos the birds going to, im sure they will be happy! :)

Thanks Mollie :) They are going to a friend who has fifty chickens, ducks and sheep! She has a lovely small holding, and two blue silkie cockerels without wives. As my silkies have been broody pretty much constantly since they arrived a year ago, I think they'll be much happier in her set up. I was going to keep them, even though i'm not overly fond, but recently they have started upsetting my pekins by not letting them lay in peace :? In fact, they have begun trying to steal eggs before they have actually left the layer  My top hen has begun laying in the run or on the coop floor and is becoming distressed. One belongs to my son, but I have promised him a new baby pekin to bond with. I just feel such guilt! I have always believed that when you take on an animal, it's for keeps :( The thing is, now that the silkies are upsetting my other girls, it's the last straw.

It wasn't fair on your other girls, good move to make.

And they will be much happier actually hatching some chicks. I'd get your son a 'surprise' of two Pekins. 8)

I know its hard re homing, but with Poultry that's sometimes what you have to do.

Three of my little LS cockerels are going soon, and like i said , i am going to miss them, but i don't have the facilities they need really.
