citychick65
Our Eglu was attacked overnight by a fox. It managed to pull out the waste drawer and tried to snatch a chicken by putting its head through..it did bite one and horrifically broke its leg. We took it to the vet this morning and Darcy was put to sleep. The bone was through the skin. The vet said it looked like a pull and twist injury which would relate to the attck. My warning is please, please make sure the draw is closed properly and the catch engaged. I'm sad to say ours hadn't been closing properly for months, the latch had bend and we'd never got round to fixing it - we have now. I never thought of a fox being able to remove the draw. LuckyChickenLover-
Oh how awful for you. I'm so sorry I put a sheet of chicken wire over the door when I noticed paw marks all over it . I don't know if this would help protect your girls in the future?
Egluntyne
Sorry to hear it. That is a shame. Thanks for the reminder to be vigilant about this.
LuckyChickenLover-
I went out and took some pics. I know mines a Go but I'm sure the same sort of thing would work on a Classic. Sorry the pics are a bit dark. Again, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss .

citychick65
I fee like I've been hugged - thankyou I like the chicken wire idea, thanks luckychickenlover, Hubby has been sent to the shed to sort out enough to cover the door and the waste tray. Has already wedged wood under the tray.. I have even sent the builders that are working on the house at moment & hubby into the garden to urinate around the perimeter!!! sadietoo
I am so sorry to hear about the attack and poor Darcy. Unfortunately, once the fox has been successful he/she will return and return even, (as I found out to my cost) during the daytime. My husband bent the clip on my eglu's poo tray some time ago. It does fit back in, but not as securely as I would like, and so I keep a plastic dustbin containing the food right behind the eglu so the tray can't be pulled out. I curse when I have to move the bin out of the way, but your post has reminded me why I need it there.
Bramble
I've taken to putting a tent peg in the ground just behind the poo tray and leaving it sticking up so I don't think it could be opened by a fox, though I know they're cunning little wotsits. Im sorry to hear about your poor chuck, but it's very kind of you to share this with us, so hopefully we can all make sure it doesn't happen again? The Dogmother
I'm sorry to hear that, and thank you for the reminder. My eglu has a really heavy bit of sculpture rolled behind the poo tray
Donna C
sorry to hear of your loss, I've just got my eglu go and felt safe in the knowledge that it was fox proof, but i think i've got one more job for oh when he gets in. Mines on concrete which i always hoped would stop mr fox.
