Strip down & cleaning the eglu and inside run.

Recommended Posts

Hi

I want to give it all a good clean out today as have had my stalosan and poulty shield turn up.

Just to check am doing it right... dilute some poulty shield give everything a good scrub, rinse then let dry off ?

Sprinkle the stalosan about in the run area.? how much do I use, sparingly or generously.

I have some diatom powder as well, so when put the eglu back together sprinkel some of that around too?

Please put me right if have got it wrong. Thanks in advance. xx

that's what I would do. never used stalosan though, so cant comment on that one.

one further question - when I do a weekly clean, I take off all the easily removable parts of the eglu and cube. I dont take the whole thing apart though - does anyone do that? ever?

I have done occasionally but, to be fair, it was when I was moving one up to and down from the patio when we used to have the run up there during the winter or when I was lending one of them to a friend and had to take it apart.

I haven't done it since then.

Hi

thanks for the reassurance :D

That didnt seem to go too badly, found it fairly easy to take the top of the eglu, the roosting bars out, waste tray etc and give a good clean down and then dusted with the diatom. Cant say I saw any red mite, but as never seen any before not sure what looking for size wise.

I can see why people like the body of the eglus for ease of cleaning. :D. Different story with the run, found that awkward to be honest. Took all the woodchip out put some fresh in, and dusted with the stalosan. Had to use a rake to try get it out  and be fairly bendy. Wouldnt it be nice to have a door in the side of the egl run which would help with the cleaning part.

But anyway its all done, smells nice, not sure if the chookie appreciate it but I do.:lol::lol:

My girls wouldnt leave me alone while I was trying to clean everything, got their beaks in the bucket, after the sponge and my rubber gloves..... you would think they would be off mooching rather than be noisy at what I was doing... bless em. :D

Weekly, we take off the top of the Eglu and remove the tray and bars which we wash in hot soapy water and then rinse off with some disinfectant (use Tesco's cheap equivalent of Baby Milton). Then we wash out the nest box in same way. Let everything air off in the sun (hopefully) or just dry with a J cloth otherwise and then put everything back at that end. We on't move the actual run but use a rake to stir up the wood chip we use in that. Then we sprinkle stalosan over the chippings and then top up with some fresh ones (only a few handfuls usually needed. Every few months we rake all the old chippings out and start again. The run is covered with a tarpaulin when it rains so the chippings stay dry and nothing smells (I don't think). We empty the dirt tray every day too.

When I first got my ex batts a couple of months ago I was steam cleaning the whole of the inside of the Eglu once a week. However now I have a Cube and an Eglu and the weather isn't so nice I'm not being as thorough. I do clean out the trays every day and check the perches but I haven't given them a good scrub for over a week

I usually get a bowl of hot soapy water and scrub the perches in that, rinse them off and then spray with poultry shield. Once that is dry I put them back and dust the inside with some Diatom.

I use Stalosan F on the floor of the run. Ours is rapport on a slabbed base so is easy to do. I do recall someone on one forum saying to use it when the floor is damp, not sure why though, but that's what I do.

My ex batts are now in the Cube and they all sleep in the nest, so I haven't had to clean the perches or empty the trays in that yet. I know some people don't approve of letting them sleep where they lay their eggs but I don't have the heart to push them out and feel being ex batts they need to be comfortable. Also I do clean out the poo from the nest when they are let out first thing so there is no poo in it when they go back to lay their eggs. Things may change when the new girls go in with them sometime in the future

When my eglu is in use, I unscrew the run from the eglu once a month and pull it away so that I can rake out and clean the run. I use BioDri too then put down clean Aubiose.

I clean the housing once a week using Total Mite Kill concentrate in the same way as you're using the Poultry Shield, then I powder it with Buz Busters anti-louse powder. Every few months, I take the whole thing apart and jet wash it before spraying and powdering as before.
