Luvachicken
I already have some Battles Poultry Drink, but did see a Johnsons product that had seaweed extract in it and at the farm where I buy the chicken food, the man always shows me some clever bottle where you squeeze the container and it fills a measured bit on the side ( not sure what its called ). But I worry about which is the best for the girls and how often they should have it - do they have it all the time all year round or just when they are moulting, or feel poorly....or when ? Redwing
Lifeguard is a tonic that does the measury thing, its good stuff An alternative is a powder tonic such as Chicken Spice I give tonics one week in four
Luvachicken
Do you know how much the Lifeguard stuff might be ?
Redwing
Its pricey, I think the bottles range from £10 to £35 It does last a while though
Luvachicken
Thank you Redwing for your replies. I will check what it is at the farm first and then perhaps get that for them.
lillybettybabs
I think i have tried most tonics, powders and pellets for health and wellbeing, I have gone back to good old Battles tonic as it seems to suit my birds very well, I also like Keep Well pellets from Verm X, I think it's finding one that suits your pocket and your chickens. . Chucky Mama
Another vote for Lifeguard here.
Jools
I've tried lots of different brands and haven't noticed any difference between them at all - except for price lol!
Lewis
We've tried a whole load too The ones we have got again are garlic granules, lifeguard and ACV
beach chick
I've just got something called Nettex Nutri-Drops - meant to be fast acting. am going to give them all some when I move them into the WIR.
The Dogmother
There is a wealth of various tonics on the market, from the powdered ones to add to feed (mine always leave these in the bottom of the feeder!) to the liquids that you add to their water. I tried mine on the pink Battles one once - they weren't too keen on it at all, they currently alternate between Life-Guard or the Nettex one, depending on which one I have to hand. I use ACV on alternate weeks just to ring the changes. Nutri-drops are great in an emergency Beach Chick - several people on here have used them with good results. Luvachicken
I quite liked the idea of putting the Lifeguard tonic in a bunny water bottle so you don't waste as much and the chickens apparently find it fun pecking at the drips from the ball bearing. Has anyone tried this ? I am a bit cross with myself because I put a bunny bottle in the recycling just a couple of months ago
Plum
I'm using lifeguard at present and Pigeon is feathering up after moult a lot quicker than last year and looks a lot fitter. It contains more vitamins and trace elements than poultry spice and battles.

Has anyone tried this ? I am a bit cross with myself because I put a bunny bottle in the recycling just a couple of months ago I always have it in a bunny bottle, or one with a sipper lip on the bottom - they love it I currently use these sipper tops, which work well - sorry about the poor picture quality, it's the only image I could find, they are great because they fit on any narrow neck pop or water bottle. Luvachicken
I bought a 600ml bunny water bottle. It's blue ( I really wanted a purple one ) so now I just need to go to the farm to get the Lifeguard tonic but what is the best amount to put in the new bottle ? How long would the mix last - I'm guessing about a week and would it be best to take it in at night? Can they then have this all the time and is ok to still put the Battles in their normal water ? Thank you
The Dogmother
The dosage is on the bottle of Life-Guard, I replace it with fresh every other day. I wouldn't mix the two - use one or t'other.
Luvachicken
Thankyou, off to the farm right now
Jools
It doesn't really matter how long you use it for, whether it's for one day, one week, one month, it's all good. I would make sure it's the only water they have available though. I only use it at times of stress (moult, broody, intros, coming into lay etc), but that's just my preference - and the fact that I don't feed treats, just pellets and a little corn (and maybe the occasional mealworm lol). Luvachicken
The bunny bottle has not been touched since I put it on so I thought I would put some in their drink container too. I hope they like it - there are an awful lot of feathers and my son was worried that something had happened to one of the girlies- until I told him Matilda was moulting. She has managed to lay the perfect egg though, albeit with no shell at all. Is that because she is moulting ?
The Dogmother
Could well be - they can't really manage the resources to produce both feathers and eggs, so you don't usually get both. My pure breeds stop laying all together at this time of year and I switch them from layers to growers feed until they have stopped moulting. I good poultry tonic or moulting rescue product in the water will help immensely
Luvachicken
I just hope they do drink it - I think it will do them good. I did give them some Verm X keep well pellets for their tea- is it ok to give them that too ? ( I know someone said not to use different tonics at the same time )
The Dogmother
I'd just stick to one thing at a time.
Luvachicken
Thanks Claret for the advice...and every one else too. The girls have been busy today drinking their new water and seem to like it but as for the bunny bottle
