the best poo tray liner...

Recommended Posts

.... that I've EVER found is Costco's own kitchen roll. It's far too big to fit on my kitchen roll holder in the kitchen, so I was a bit annoyed - but 2 sheets will line a cube poo tray, and if you then drape another 2 sheets over the bump in the middle before you put the roosting bars in, bob's your auntie - NOTHING sticks!! makes cleaning out so much easier.

In our local markets over here there is always a stall that sells "off the roll" thick vinyl table cover type stuff. It's a bit like lightweight cushion floor that people use on their outdoor tables. It's totally washable and so easy for keeping the poo tray clean. One metre makes a perfect liner for our girls tray and I disinfect each morning when I clear out the poo. It costs around 10 euro's a metre, so in UK it would be about 7 quid. It is really hardwearing and good value. Plus if you have exbatts unable to use roosting bars it's nice and comfy to sleep on :D

Unfotunately I don't yet have an Eglu, but only a wee wooden hen house. However the makers were full of the fact that it has a slatted floor (like the Eglu, I think) with a pull out tray underneath (poo tray?). The poos, however, seemed to land on the slats and were often too big to go down the gaps. Consequently after day 2 I lined the slatted floor under the perch with newspaper. Each morning I take out the newspaper (with gloves on) and s"Ooops, word censored!"e the poos off into my composter / wormery, then replace it with fresh newspaper. It only takes minutes. The poo tray now only seems to get a few scales in it from off of the chick's legs and these I shake out every week. Has anyone else found that pull out trays and slatted floors aren't really all that necessary? I ask because I've suggested that a bigger house (for morehens  ) might make a good Christmas present for me and I want to point OH in the right direction
