Chicken deficient
I asked the other half if he wanted some ideas for birthday presents for me. He said yes, so, I sat him down, bound and gagged -yes really (I stuffed a hankie in his mouth and up his left nostril, just to be sure...) ...and said I'd really like two winter blue egg layers! So, does anyone have any suggestions. We have just pure breeds at the moment, so no eggs over the winter months. Do hybrids lay all year round, or do they take a break too? beach chick
are there blue-egg-laying hybrids? I've got an araucana, but she's not laid in months... but if you could find a hybrid that did the deed I'd be very interested!! and well done your other half, I hope you've untied him now? Chucky1
Our Rangers lay most of the time and we generally get eggs from 75% of the flock - sometimes we have to hunt for them in the hedgerows and barns but .... Good Luck
Snowy
There is a hybrid of the cream crested legbar - they are often called columbines/skylines or jasmines. They would probably lay through the winter the first year, but take a break after that. Still lay more than a pure breed though. Most of them have an 80% chance of laying a blue egg. MarkBevBen
What a lovely birthday present, well done your hubby!
Kit
Hi Yes I have 2 jasmines but unfortunately they have stopped laying but it could be due to the fact that they are presently moulting. This is their 1st winter and they don't half look funny at present even with their jedward heads.
scarlettohara
The darker skylines tend to lay the blue eggs

Egluntyne
are there blue-egg-laying hybrids? I have three Fenton Blues which are blue egg laying hybrids. Close Cousin to the Skyline I'd say.
daxigirl
Paxo's an Araucana (hatched in March this year) and she's laying, well started 3 weeks ago now, not everyday but nearly. Really lovely blue eggs. I've got a CC Legbar too but she's still a baby.
NatalieC
Hope he's better at taking the hint than my other half - I was supposed to be having a Cube for Christmas last year. I was very excited and when the big day arrived he struggled into the living room with a very large flattish box (no cube in there, I thought, not unless they are flat pack). To my horror, it was a bike. I am NOT a bike riding sort of person and I had even pointed this out to him a few weeks before. He still hasn't redeemed himself and its my birthday on Tuesday - I haven't built my hopes up! I hear Legbars are nice though!

Chortle Chook
I've been laying the odd egg (metaphorically) in my OH's head that I'd like all things chickeny for Christmas and / or birthday presents for some time to come. I've book marked the Omlet site on his laptop and I've tried very hard to draw his attention to things from little books to pretty coloured grubs and glugs to Eglus depending on his budget . . . but I'm not all that hopeful. Guess it works both ways. He loves hi fi and I can never remeber one thing from the next because it leaves me cold. I think it is that way with him and chooks. Chicken deficient
Binding and gagging seems to be the way forward, thanks for the tip CD... I want an extension for Xmas! It worked really well. I thought he'd blow his nut, particularly since I've only just got two new bantams. By the time he'd finished struggling and trying to spit out the hankie, he actually thought it was quite funny. Obviously, being gagged, he couldn't say 'yes', so I left it 'til this afternoon to discuss which ones to go for. He actually asked, (and I nearly fell over): "Can we just buy them, or do we need to reserve them?" !!! Next mission is to get him to agree to letting Dolly and Edna stay in the garden. Step in the right direction today when he commented on how nice they looked pottering around...
