Dental implants

Recommended Posts

I might need 2!!

Just got back from the dentist having found out that a root canal treatment I had 6 years ago has failed because there is probably a 3rd root that was not treated.

To cut a long story short, I will eventually need to have 2 teeth replaced with either crowns and posts or dental implants.

Obviously the implants would be a better option, apart from the enormous cost and the idea of having something screwed into the bone!:shock:

I was just wondering if anyone else has had this sort of dental treatment?

Feeling a bit fed up at the moment! :boohoo:

Him Indoors has a gob full of implants, enough to rival Simon Cowell. Well, 2 either side. He had exactly the same problem as you Janepie.

Cost a kings Ransom, but he has been very pleased with the results.

There was a gappy month or two whilst the 'pegs' settled down, but apart from that it was pretty plain sailing.

I can definitely recommend them! I had two done just over 2 years ago and have had absolutely no regrets. Basically, I had a tooth (molar) that had decayed under a crown  and had to have it removed (left with gap), then the following year the tooth in front, which had been root canal treated, started to crumble.

I was able to have the root canal tooth extracted and two implants (the metal 'roots' that go into the gums) put in at the same time. They use a very strong local anaesthetic so that you really don't feel much of anything at all going on in your mouth - much less than you can feel with regular fillings. (You can also have a sedative if you want, but I decided to be brave!) After that, there was a 2-month period to allow everything to heal, then a couple of sessions to fit the new caps (v similar to regular crowns). The first session invovled taking impressions etc, same as for crowns, then a second session where they were screwed onto the 'roots'. Mine are so good that a new dental nurse recently asked which ones were the implants!

The main thing you have to bear in mind is that good oral hygeine is very important for long-term success. Regular flossing, 3-monthly visits to hygeinist etc. Smoking is also a significant risk factor for failure.

It wasn't cheap, but hopefully they will last a lot longer than the bridge or plate that were my other options.

Hope this helps and good luck if you do decide to go ahead with them.

I've had some implants, they are expensive, however mine look really good. Our dentist (who is fab!) said really I was too young for dentures ( :D ) and that implants were the way to go in my circumstances.

I think I had to wait 3 months between the posts going in and the tooth being put on. As a person who really hates dentists (hence why they were in such a bad condition) I didn't find it too bad, though I also think it was a lot down to the dentist. The actual bit I found worst was having the impressions taken as it felt quite claustrophobic in my mouth and the glup smelt like playdough and had a horrible texture! But overall was fine. :D

I echo everything Medwriter wrote.

Yes - that was worst bit for me too. I told dentist that I would time it with my watch (5 mins Ithink ? or 2 ??)

- gave me something to concentrate on and I knew the end was approaching
