buffie
Ok the plan is now set. Mikey wants to have a go at building a little free range 'house' for Charlie to live in, it needs to fit 2 birds in case she decides to have a live in pal. The mark 2 is going to be home for the cochin, cobar, brahma and 2nd cochin for a period until they get too big and then I guess the cube Lottie, flo and will are moving back to mark 1 They will all free range together. This is the plan for the weekend and I have booked a cochin and brahma from rugby to collect on tuesday. Mikey has fallen for the heavy breeds and I have been in touch with the president of the cochin society for advice! Any ideas on a plan appreciated we want the house to look like a little house, very cute in the border and Mikey will make a run for any times we have to be away for a night. My parents stay over if we go away for a few days Well thats the hen out of the bag, no allotment now so plenty of time BBxx Edited May 11, 2007 by Guest
Jools
What about a baby version of this: http://www.newbarntimberproducts.co.uk/granary%20range.htm You could use some coloured stain so it matches or contrasts with your eglus! A couple of years ago a Pink Hen House was featured in Country Living - can't find the details now for the life of me though.
Jools
Or something resembling this http://www.forshamcottagearks.com/poultry-housing/boughton902-poultry-house.htm (without the extension) - that way you get your house and occasional run all in one. I have two of these for my bantams and though they are hardly ever shut in, it's good to have the option and you can keep their food & water under cover. Oh, I'm off on one now......... theherd123
WOW!!! Buff your plans for expanding the flock sound great! Personally i think a smaller version of St Pauls Cathedral would look so good in your garden for the hens to live in!
Olly
Awww they all remind me of the bright coloured beach huts at Southwold! Can just picture the chooks getting their deckchairs out, with knotted hankies on their combs!!!! I'm off to Southwold for the weekend. If I see any chickens in deckchairs I will DEFINITELY take a picture. Mind you, after a couple of pints of Adnams, I may well see some strange sights

buffie
Well after a lot of thought and dreams of red mite We decided to not go with a wooden house. Mikey even offered me another eglu and I turned it down for now. WE want a cube, later in the year . Anyway I have got will, flo and lottie moving in with Charlie. They now all sleep together and I have popped a bumper bit on Charlie. She is ok with it and much less aggressive now. Getting our new Brahma and cochin this saturday and they will move in with Dolly and Tilly, Mikey wants to call them Polly and Sybil from fawlty towers excited BBxx
The Dogmother
Aww bless If Mike would do anyhting for me, do you want to swap him for my baldie? Phil's got a bit of making up to do at the moment, after his obnoxious mate being down for a week
buffie
phil's lovely but couldn't swap my pug. Will post pics of Mikey's hen proofing of the deck, BBx
The Dogmother
That sounds intriguing - last time I saw them, the girls were lined up along the bannister of the decking I've recently chook-proofed my patio and borders; fingers crossed that it will keep them off. buffie
He's made a temporary fenced off area with 2 gates, done a good job and I have hung off some sweet bunting. We used pond netting so you can see through it and watch the girls and see the garden I used a staple gun to attach the netting and hey presto. will post some pics when I can get hold of the camera I originally wanted ballastrade around the deck to make 2 gardens and now we have the same sort of thing. The guy who did the deck didn't want to do that but have to say it is better and Mikey agree's that it looks bigger. I can have plants in pots now Bit of an edit...spelling BBx Edited May 10, 2007 by Guest
The Dogmother
That sounds intriguing - last time I saw them, the girls were lined up along the bannister of the decking I've recently chook-proofed my patio and borders; fingers crossed that it will keep them off. But unfortunately it doesn't does it,Mum? I hope it starts doing its job!
buffie
Well my chook proof border has been infiltrated by Charlie, who has recovered from her loss of Harrie and having a bumper bit. Become friendly with all the other chooks, took shelter with them yesterday and even had a sun bathe with them and is getting over my net. I think she needs a wing clip but being light she can flutter high They really are like raptors, Mikey always says she is testing the defences, she really does work it out and find the weak point BBx
The Dogmother
Dolly is our intruder; because she is taller than the others, she can see over the wire and therefore thinks that she can jump it (which she can). The others are much shorter and can only see wire in front of their eyes, so they stay on the grass side of the wire.
buffie
Just checked an I get the chooks tomorrowe at 11am We are also considering selling mark2 and getting a cube but not sure the cochin can walk up a ladder Excited and want to dance around Sorry BBx
The Dogmother
Briliant news Buffie. The Cochin should be ok with the ladder - they're massive chooks and I don't think the legs would be too short.
buffie
I get a feeling I'll collect them and they won't fit in the mark 2, we'll manage for now and it will be a cube job soon I expect. I was expecting to pay more for the chooks, so saved there BBx
