Nicola O
I've just been out to shut up the coops and found one of the ex-bats that I rescued 3 weeks ago had died in the run. She looks like she had a prolapse which the others must have been pecking at as her rear was rather bloody, though it didn't look like too much 'damage' done to her (sorry if TMI). I had been having quite a few softies so I wonder if she had been having problems (I couldn't tell who was laying the softies as they were usually laid over night). She had been eating well (her crop was full) and seemed well in every other way. I feel really quilty as I had today off work but went out christmas shopping, if I had been here I could have seen the problem and helped her. It so sad as she should of had a full and better life but sadly it only lasted three weeks. Nicola

Nicola O
Thanks everyone for your kind words. I'll pop her to the vet today to be cremated. I can't bear the thought of putting her in the bin and the vet only charges me about £15.00. How many ex-batts do you have? I collected six three weeks ago which I have in two groups of three, and I still have Stan who is the lone surviver of last years ex-batts. Stans companion was put to sleep 10 days ago so I moved her in with the big girls, but she doesn't seem happy as Doris keeps picking on her - I wonder if I should put her in with two new girls. Nicola O
Spent a couple of hours this morning cleaning out the run than the two ex-batts are in and putting down fresh bedding and then I popped Stan in with them. They all ran up to each other and Stan instantly shouted 'I'M in charge now, anyone got anything to say about that ??' and the batties decided that no, they had nothing to say on the subject but...... It only took ten minutes for the batties to work out that if they worked together.........so now Stan has been chased round the run, and pecked a couple of times but nothing serious. But just to make me feel REALLY guilty when she gets pecked she is screaming (probably cursing me). Stan is probably a bit confused as this is her second move in 10 days since her mate was PTS, but I think once settled she will be happier as she was top chook with her own group of ex-batt so didn't take too well at being at the bottom of the pack in the cube (where there are five big girls) and Doris was really picking on her. I'm hopeing that, even if she is bottom of the ranks now, that as she will only have two above her she will be happier. Nicola
