Poorly Chicken

Recommended Posts

The medicine we have is called Zolcal D and she has to have 1ml mixed with 10ml of water and then she has just 1ml of the diluted solution a day, so 10ml will last her for the 10 day course. I keep telling my OH to put her back in the conservatory, but he is worried she will be lonely and cold in there, he can't seem to understand what I am telling him from on here about her not getting too used to the warmth :?

Now I am beginning to question what she laid earlier as my OH says a softie is technically an egg with a soft shell, but all I saw come out of her was the inside of the egg. Could that mean she still has the membrane inside her :?:

It is possible that some membrane and/or shell could still be present inside her.

I would only investigate this if she didn't improve.... also not sure you would poke around inside her anyways.

See what tomorrow brings. try to keep her covered, light wise, at this time so she roosts and recouperates a little.

Well OH did wonder if there might be some membrane and/or shell inside her still. He was going to investigate, but he's as rough as a badger at the best of times so I wouldn't wish him on poor Bella. Good idea to keep her covered, right now she is in the living room with the TV on and the lights on, so not really the best way to get to sleep. Once OH is back from walking the dog I will get him to move her into the conservatory and hope that she improves overnight :?

Well there are a few positives in today's happenings aren't there. First, the vet has cleared an obstruction. Then, she was able to lay a softy. It's great that she is drinking a lot. Does she like grapes or sweetcorn? I used to mix one of our's antibiotics in with some wet sweetcorn or pop it onto the wet bit of half a grape and she used to just gobble it up. In fact if you have a syringe, our vet told us to inject the grape halves with the medicine and then feed it to her.

Do you have a room which is warmer than your conservatory, but still fairly cool, which could be kept dark and quiet overnight?

Hope she perks up in the morning :)

I expect she had a soft or thin shelled egg previously and the shell was left behind.

sometimes they pass these on their own, sometimes they get stuck across and need removing as it is

1. going bad internally and

2. acting like a plug preventing the next one coming out

Laying a softee often makes them feel pants too, nothing to push against, they also do seem to drink a lot (well mine do)

Steve it is mine that are ex bats, I don't think this one is? but I sometimes get mixed up with peoples posting.

If she is , then it is very very common.

#Anyway, once Vet un plugged the vent so to speak, she popped out a softee.

Sometimes there is a shell to follow, sometimes if you can get them back to laying with a shell it will come out with the next egg, sometimes they rid themselves a little while later.

there could well be more sort of backed up a little..

But she probably perk right up now. :D

I am sure Zolcal D has instruction for adding to water on the bottle!

you did the right thing getting her to the vet if it was stuck it would have caused an infection.

My vet says unless you know what you are doing, best not to poke about, you might damage something, but I know lots of people do.Just not for me :)

Yes she is an ex batt, apparently this is quite common with them, according to the vet.

Just remembered that all the ex batts love sweetcorn so we have put a ramekin of sweetcorn and a bit of oyster shell in her box and she has started eating that which is a good sign I hope.

We just feel we want to pick her up and cuddle her all night and if she didn't have such runny poos I think we would :o

hope she's getting better Mercedes. my poorly one is in the porch since this morning; thought about bringing her back indoors for the night but it is just too hot. plus she's sleeping out there, which she wasnt really doing indoors. she's in a tortoise cage, on a thick layer of newspapers and a towel, and I've put a plastic backed picnic rug over the top with another towel on top and one hung down over the front to keep it dark/breeze out.

everything crossed for them eh? :)

oh yes.... par for the course bless her. :( they are so so calcium deficient when they first get out. hence broken bones etc.

the ex bat crumb is well reported on, mine won't eat it!!! also the amount of nasty orange wet poo is def def higher when on that.

I cannot recommend oregostim or similar highly enough...

My first ex bats got sick and someone on here suggested it, not shell wise just general health, yes it is expensive but a litre bottle will last forever...... 1ml per litre of water for the strength i have :)

I've had my ex batts and also my new girls on the ex batts food since day one. Also put bokashi bran and a pinch of poultry spice in their food every day and ACV in their water most days too, plus the mixed grit and oyster shell of course.

Beach Chick, hope your girl is better soon too. It's so awful seeing them so ill isn't it, you feel so helpless :?

I've left it a bit late to post as I wanted to see how Bella did for the morning first. So far, touch wood, she seems fine. She was okay this morning so we moved her back into the conservatory to get used to the chill in there. We then put her back in the WIR so that she could see her friends and just to see how she would be. She was fine for awhile, then went into the Cube and sat in the nest. However after a bit she came out again and mixed quite normally with the other girls. She did go back into the nest once more and OH had to encourage her out, but she's now been out there for about 5hrs and she is eating well, drinking and behaving quite normally. OH has been busy giving them mashed potatoes, spinach and sweetcorn and Bella has really got them all back in their place and has been bossing them all about as usual. Just hoping it was just a blip with her as the vet said it could be. Thankfully the weather is much milder today and they've all spent a bit of time FR in the garden too, so just need to make sure we keep giving her the drops and generally keep an eye on her. We have been checking her crop and it's quite full so that's positive :)
