OllieNLucys Mum
I have a cockerel and 3 hens in a cube. Generally speaking Ollie stays in the main part of the cube and the girls lay in the nesting bit. With the advent of the cold weather i have put straw in all of the cube as an insulator to help keep them warm as its been -10 for sometime. Ollie who is quite a size has now taken ownership of the nesting area forcing the girls to lay outside or in the main part of the cube. he must have to really squash himself to get in there. Last night i opened the egg door to check everyone was in bed safely and they were all in there like sardines Obviously the girls have decided to reassert themselves It was so cramped one of them virtually fell out. Does anyone else have a cockerel in a cube ? where does he sleep?
meezers
I have a wooden coop, but my cockerel squashes into the nestbox with the Faverolles and Silkie, my Araucana has the perch all to herself.
Patricia W
Phillip sleeps where the girls will let him. He is a bit hen-pecked... At dusk before they go to bed though he positions himself in the doorway so they all have to push past to get in.
peebles
I have a wooden house, two hens roost in the 'roof' of the hut (no actual perch up there, nice one girls) over the nesting boxes. The little two sleep together in a nesting box. Ginger alternates who he sleeps with, either forcing his way up top or squeezing in to the nesting box with his tail feathers hanging out. The little two snuggle under him like chicks
Daphne
Now my boy roosts on the bars in the cube as do the girls.....but when I first got it they were all used to roosting on aubiose in a wooden house so all of them would try to get into the nesting box. And get very squashed/wedged in and the poo was all over them. So I put plant pots in there (for weeks and weeks) till they got the message. If you're bothered by the boy hogging the nest box and if you're girls aren't laying late or early then you could try this - force them all out for a while into the cube body.
