Gertie
Hi all I have 7 hens & am currently getting around 6 or 7 eggs a day. I'm eating as many as I can but...failing to keep the pile down! Even with the egg recipe book I had for Christmas! I would like to take some to work to sell. I've already given tons away to friends & neighbours but thought if I could recoup some money to pay for feed this would be a good plan! The boxes I've given away are the freshest eggs & I always date them. Ive looked at the FAQ but the link to the Defra site doesn't take me to an article. I've searched that site but only found info about testing for salmonella. I can't find anything on the omlet forum either. Does anyone know about selling eggs? Are there any restrictions? Many thanks
chickyhazel
According to DEFRA: If you are just selling a few boxes to friends every week then there are no regulations other than the eggs must be fresh and safe to eat If you sell a large amount of eggs at a market or as a business then you have to register this with DEFRA (I don't know how, I have never done it.) I am sure plenty of your friends and neighbours would pay £1 or so for half a dozen fresh eggs! Ours are happy to!
Gertie
Thanks Chickyhazel. Should be fine then!
Snoxy
I sell my girls eggs...have lots of customers...and 2 who take some every week I don't advertise them in any way but word gets around and friends of friends at school etc. approach me. I sell half a dozen medium to extra large eggs for £1.25...I keep the ones that weigh less than 53gms (small) for us...although at the moment I only have one hen who lays small ones and that's because she has only just started laying bless her. Colours in a typical box can be a mix of white, beige, brown, brown speckled, pastel green, sage green with white speckles and blue...they look so pretty. One customer even suggested I should charge more. Mr Snox designed a label for me which looks pretty good. First and foremost I like others to try my girls gorgeous eggs as I am very proud of them although the money certainly helps pay towards feed, bedding etc. I clean the eggs...put the name of the hen that laid the egg, the date it was laid and whether it is medium (M), large (L) or extra large (XL) on the egg. Some of my customers say their children like eggs laid by specific hens so I try to include one laid by their fav hen...although I do sell them in the order they are laid as much as possible. I think £1.25 is cheap for your eggs. Isn't that cheaper than a box of 'nice' eggs from Tesco? I reckon you deserve as much, if not more, than Tesco. Can we see the label Mr Snox designed? How sweet is that?: Children like eggs laid by specific hens... ahhhhh
thenewchick
I sell 6 eggs for £1.50 and I think that's a bargain for my extra special eggs!
Gertie
Well I can report success on my girls eggs sale. I got a pretty wicker basket & a honey pot & made a sign with a photo (not as professional as your label sounds Snoxy!). I asked for £1 per box which I think is a bargain! I have sold 4 boxes so far and been asked for weekly eggs from 2 colleagues and one who ate them when I gave them away free before said they really enjoyed sitting down and just enjoying a fresh boiled egg! I will definitely pass on the complements to the girls!!
Lewis
We said we'd charge £1.50 for 6 but always just seem to give them away
Space Chick
We sell ours for £1.50 a half dozen, and we have stickers made for our egg boxes I think for the freshness and quality they are a bargain, and we certainly have more potential customers than we have eggs
goodinparts
I usually give mine away - often take them to a family if I'm visiting before a funeral - but I did get a record £12.50 for 6 at a church auction to raise money for the Pakistan flood appeal... They are nice eggs, & my girls are VERY clever - but not sure they are THAT nice!
Gertie
Wow! That's great & for a good cause of course. I do give lots away as I'm generous...but not that generous trying to make this hobby a little less costly even if it's a drop in the ocean! It's lovely that you take them to families as gifts as well
chestnutmare
Gertie, I think you shoudl charge more than £1 as box (half dozen?) - cause they're worth more and then you'll soon be rich!
Snoxy
One of my customers paid for a box that she was donating to a raffle for the Blind...it was one of those proud 'Mummy' moments
Gertie
Ha ha ha! Got to sell a few more boxes for around £500 each to break even...then I'm in the money. But I was hoping to win the lottery before that!!! Sigh!

Many thanks your eggs wouyld be classed as 'farm gate sales' so no, there are no restrictions. I always mark the date they were laid on the shell in oencil and then tell people to eat them within 3 weeks.
