abwsco
Having to reformat and install XP on one of the PC's so which is the best one currently around. Have Avast on the main one and am happy with that. Was wondering about Microsoft Security Essential. Ta

Sam
I also use AVG. Never had a virus or trojan, well apart from once but it soon got rid of it with a click of a button
abwsco
I got rid of AVG ages ago as it turned into a big resource hog. Should have said

abwsco
Thanks Fred. Got to get the PC connecting to the internet now. Can't get it sorted out
majorbloodnock
All AV products go through patches where a release is a bit of a resource hog, but the manufacturers tend to try to fix that fairly quickly as it's something people pick up on. Of the free offerings, AVG, Avast and Avira all have good solid virus databases behind them, so are all pretty much of a muchness, and easily on a par with the commercial alternatives (all are just free versions of commercial products anyway). I found AVG to be a resource hog too, but have recently come back round to it and its current version seems to be fine.Ditto Avast. Avira is perhaps the least resource hungry, but does give an annoying "why not upgrade?" message every time it performs an update. At least it's easy to uninstall the free AV packages and move around, which is more than can be said of Norton, MacAfee and Symantec. debbier
I got fed up with avg around release 7/8? as it was just too weighty. I tried avast, but in the end installed Microsoft Security Essentials, and I get on fine with it. It's also been on several relatives' pcs for some time now, and I haven't heard anything back from them (which is a Good Thing!).
WarrensWorld
AVG, never had a problem. Tried MSE just appears to be updating all of the time, and slowing up the computer.

docsquid
My husband uses Microsoft Security Essentials and thinks it is very good. I'm using Norton at the moment as I got a year free with my new PC - don't know what I'll do when that runs out.

majorbloodnock
Intriguing. That's not my experience, but you can't argue with real life results.
WarrensWorld
Intriguing. That's not my experience, but you can't argue with real life results. I was warned off Norton by a few computer wizards. To quote one of them "Its like driving your car with the handbrake on".
gongladosh
The other option is if you have a Barclays Bank online account - they give you Kaskersky Antivirus for free if you apply via the online banking site.
