coco
How many other peoples hens dig holes. Some of them are about a foot deep. Its usually the smallest hen digs the deepest hole. Its ok until I go into the run in ther dark and fall down one.
Henslaved
Do they have a dust bath in their run? If not they maybe making their own . Or maybe they've seen Chicken Run
Chucky Mama
Mine have several favourite holes that they work on around the garden. They are used as dustbath or mid morning/late afternoon snooze dens. Some are really deep.

JillM
How can you protect them from foxes trying to dig their way IN if they're going to meet them halfway digging their way OUT!
bucklamp
Indeed, it is almost like the "Great Escape". Fill your feathers full of soil and shake in another part of the run. I'm sure that they are eating their way out as well, especially when you top up their latest dust bath with play sand.
Lavenders_Blue
Lots of 'ankle breakers' in my garden too Sometimes the hens dig themselves a dustbath, sometimes they dig just because they can. Hubby and I often look out of the window and say, 'Ooh look, the girls are tunnelling to Australia again!'
Charlottechicken
Its usually the smallest hen digs the deepest hole. Ahh bless! My smallest original Omlet gingernut ranger used to dig fabulous holes, straight down! Sometimes I only knew where she was by the soil flying in the air You could put her anywhere and she would just start digging!
daxigirl
I've got images of watership down crossed with the great escape with "bright eyes" playing in the background. Love it.
