Running Diary

I wouldn't worry too much about distance or time. Just try to keep going at a pace that feels comfortable. Also don't worry about stopping to walk and for a quick breather (as long as you don't get stitch). You will improve :D Strangely I found that I got better after a while at running long distances than shorter ones. I would never have dreamed that 7 miles would have felt like a warm up for me :shock: You may find that it takes you a few miles to actually warm up and for your body to feel comfortable. Make sure that you are not running too fast. You should be able to hold a conversation. Plan your running so that you haven't recently eaten - that will make you feel rough, and also keep hydrated. A lot of it is mental, I found that as soon as I thought 'I want to stop' - I stopped, it was very annoying. When you are feeling rough have a think about what it is making you feel rough. I found that my legs were actually no tired so why was I feeling like packing it in? Boredom is a factor sometimes and also looking ahead at how far you have to go. Try to tune out - music helps as does looking at your feet instead of the hill you need to run up. It might be a good idea to plan to run a 5k or 10k by a particular date. You don't have to actually run the race but set yourself a target. You can then follow a plan from somewhere like Runner's World. I had a marathon plan and I found that because it was down in black and white that I should be running x distance on x day I would do it and knew that it was doable as it was in the plan for a novice like me. Left to my own devices now I will think of any excuse not to run. Good luck Bramble :D

Oops, nearly forgot (despite my essay :oops: ) Don't forget rest days which are essential both mentally and physically. You should have at least 2 days off a weak.

Thank you CM!!

I'm going to try a new route and put some new stuff on my mp3 in case boredom is the problem. You are completely right about it being as much (if not more) of a mental challenge than it is physical.

I've been running 3 times per week, but would like ideally to up it to four if not 5 times.

I'm even debating whether to join a gym so I can run on a treadmill instead of outside (think I'll have to do that in winter).

Will keep plodding on though and see if I can get over this current blip!!

Hi,

Jlo you look far too lovely to have been running :!:

Too many things getting in the way this week. You know, storms, mini tornados and now sore throat :twisted: But went out a longish run today with Simon. I think I'm going to have to rethink my plan. I am having fun but not really improving. TBH i kind of don't feel it matters, but a bit of me does :? . I like my jog-abouts but a bit of me wants to get better too.

Oh well, lets see what next week brings.

I've been totally lacking motivation for the past 2 weeks :( . I'm hoping when my GPS watch arrives I'll be so keen to play with it, I'll be running all over the shop :pray: .

The weather's been rubbish here too, howling gales most days which I hate running in :evil: .

Have you heard back about the London Marathon yet, Alli?

Well I did week 11 run 1 last night. Decided to set off on a 5k route and for the first time did this without the couch to 5k podcast, I had my own music on my mp3!

I did a combo of walking and running (mainly walking on the bits where I might be seen :anxious: ). Still finding it very hard at the moment, but will keep plodding on. Might go out again later today as I won't be able to go again until Thursday, so we'll see!

Well done 8) . Did it feel different doing it without the podcasts?!

I went for a physio appt today (slightly achey back again so thought I'd nip it in the bud). She commented that one heel was slightly out of line and confirmed I'm pronating which could be causing the sore back. She suggested seeing a podiatrist to possibly get insoles. She said I'd run better and faster afterwards :shock::dance: .

I pronate really badly - (if that is the correct way of phrasing it!)

I think that I mentioned it a while back and a fellow forum member suggested very strongly that I go to a podiatrist. I did go but it wasn't terribly successful. I have however got some insoles just from Boots and they seem to help a bit.

It can really muck up most of your body so it is worth looking into.

Ooo, see if you can find a running shop that sells trainers that also has a computerised treadmill. They measure your gait and whether you over/under pronate, whether you are flat footed etc. They can then put you in a trainer to allow for however you run and then measure you again to check that it has been corrected. I had it done before I started running and was so impressed that I had all of the children done too. They were all prone to getting sore knees but it hasn't been a problem since they were fitted with a trainer that suits their individual gaits. There is a very basic way of checking on the Runners World website where you check the print that your foot makes and it then points you towards the best trainer. It's better than nothing but it is better to have your gait measured when you are actually running :D

I did do that but they couldn't find a trainer that supported me enough on its own so I need insoles as well. It's hard being a crock!!

I agree though - it is a great facility if you can find a shop that does it.

Feeling very fed up :(

Forced myself to go out last night but I was only able to run for about 20 minutes, I just don't understand why I'm finding this so hard now. Maybe I need to go back to some of the earlier podcasts to see if I can get back in the groove?

Maybe you need to give yourself a break - you can get sick of it if you're doing it all the time. Don't feel pressurized into going so often - fewer runs that you enjoy will be better than struggling to do loads and hating every minute.

There's certainly no harm going back to the podcasts though, it might make the difference :) .

~~~~~~~~~~~
I tried my fab new GPS watch last night :D . I love it - it's pretty small (compared to OH's PC sized watch :roll: ) and looking at all the stats afterwards is really interesting 8) . Before I realised I hadn't set my data to private, the very short run I did was on the database showing for anyone who searched for runs in Edinburgh to see :lol: .
Are you sure that you are well enough to be running? You could be anaemic or something. Try not pushing yourself to go out. Get up and go if and when you feel like it. Sounds like you are loosing confidence. I ran a marathon last year and not barely scratch around 2.5 miles without feeling like dying :lol: Don't beat yourself up, any distance in any time is fine :D
I agree totally with C/M. Unless you're training to run for a specific event/distance in a particular time, there is absolutely nothing wrong in having walking breaks even very long walking breaks. As I've said so often I have walking breaks every time I'm out :!: I probably shouldn't but so what, it doesn't make me a lesser person. The only problem is that I can't keep up with fit fast people any more but I can't say I'm too bothered.
I am a tiny little bit concerned that I will have a laughably slow time in September, but hopefully my fellow omleteers will keep warm during the long wait before I come in :lol:
Come on Bramble, don't take it too seriously , just remember how good it feels to be out there, with the wind in your hair :D Alli xx
Bramble, I agree with both of them. You've done fabulously well up till now - give yourself a break :) .
Don't be daft :lol: . I'm planning on enjoying the spectacle rather than running fit to bust - I'm hoping Team Omlet can all run together :D .
Thank you all for your encouragement, you've made me feel loads better! :)
I've taken your advice and didn't run this morning as I'd planned, went for an extra long dog walk instead, which we both enjoyed (might go out tonight, but we'll see)
I've also downloaded the first week of a 10k plan, but don't panic, it's not that I'm aiming to run 10k, but I'm hoping it'll help me be able to get back on tack and run for a bit longer - I'm just going to see how it goes ... :anxious:
Thank you again everyone, I don't know what I'd do without you all :)
Well, determined as I am not to give up on this running lark, I downloaded a new podcast, (well week one of it) from Amazon (good grief, I'm having to pay for this one :shock: !!!!!) It's a 10k plan, but I'm not necessarily aiming for that distance, it'll just give me a fresh challenge :anxious: (hopefully).
I felt dreadful about not going out yesterday morning, so decided I'd go last night and try run one of the new podcast. It was a 20 minute pacing run. I was supposed to start slow, build up to run "faster than usual" for a couple of minutes in the middle and then slow down again.
The good news is, I did it!!!!! I don't suppose I did the pacing bit properly, but I kept going for the full 20 minutes and without too many problems, didn't have to stop so feel much better now. Hopefully, the last few runs have been a "blip" and I can stop messing about and get on with it now!
