A gap in the market for 1) women with hips and not a big waist

(but possibly big tum)

[Petite, or "short leg" sometimes works for my little short legs.

If I wear a belt then trousers are too tight around the crotch  but withouit I risk builder's bum

I'm slim on top with narrow shoulders, and now a writing up tummy  ]

and 2) tall women

in fact clothes don't seem to be designed to fit women.

Don't go on a diet because of clothes Annie.

I love my jumper dress that I can wear over my comfy jeans and you can't see the holes :lol:

I found my parking space outside M&S - 30 mins for a sprint around New Look and then M&S.

I grabbed the first thing that looked stretchy enough and comfortable enough - 2 pairs, different colours, only one pair in Medium length so one pair in Long and will have to be taken up  - dash back to the car before receiving a parking ticket..........

I just need time to try them on now. Perhaps if I got off this forum........

mmmmmm...., waist, I remember one of those. I used to have one once, BK (before kids!) Last year hipster look was a disaster for me - couldn't find ANY trousers that I wasn't constantly hitching up, try and find a bra (sorry boys!) that is vaguely large AND pretty but doesn't cost over £25 and I will love you for ever, - was going to join in on the clothes rant but smallest boy has woken up - he's been throwing up all day and is feeling pretty sorry for himself,

back later ladies

Oh i cant help but join in here!!!

I hate shopping and clothes shopping is just the worst! :x

Lets just say Buffies doesnt call me Orps for nothing  so finding tops that actually fit around my boobs and then come in at the waist is an artform! :x:x I usually get them to fit on the boobs and then they just hang like a sack of spuds making me look shapeless :( or fit at the waist and then wont fasten at the top.

I know i can buy tops at Bravissimo that will fit me but i am reluctant to pay £30+ for a casual top that i should be able to buy in any high street store that fits just the same for half the price!

I'm with you on that one Emma!

I love looking through the bravissimo catalogue but can very rarely justify buying anything from there!

And why, when I get a top that fits across the chest, does it then expose my stomach?? I quite like hipsters because I have narrow hips and no waist, but all my tops end just above the naval and the jeans stop just below. WHY aren't tops made a little bit longer! I'm only 5' 1" for goodness sake, how do you 5' 11" peeps manage!:roll:

Clothes sizing is so stupid.

Take New Look for example-you'd have to be a size 6 to fit in their size 8 stuff and the trousers are really stupid. I take it they're based on 'AVERAGE' people, however no one is an average size, therefore none of it's the right shape on everyone!

Same with shoes!

Its really annoying, I know. I am a 14 top, 12 bum and 14 waist (if I'm lucky!) and anything from 4.5 t 6 in shoes!

I used to work in the fashion industry and basically there is a standard size for each size BUT (and this is where is gets interesting) there is up to a 2 inch either way difference, which is supposed to accomodate all stages of womanhood. So, if you are a size 12 at 18 and a size 12 at 40 (don't we all wish!), the clothes made for younger women (which are generally cheaper and cut much smaller to get the most usage out of the fabric) will be a completely different shape than those made for older women. Plus, with that 2 inch allowance, the sizes can vary desperately.

So, top shop, new look, river island etc normally cater to the skinny youngsters and Marks and Spencer, Next (sometimes!), Monsoon et al tend to cut a bit more generously but you will pay a bit more.

Its all generalisations though, I have tops in my wardrobe from Next that are 12 and fit beautifully, and others in size 16 that are tight.

Who'd be a woman?

Me too, Me too!!!

Horrible buying bras when you have big boobs, isn't it?

I bent over to pull out a weed yesterday & the wire snapped in my most favourite & most comfy bra,so its off on the annual bra hunt in Reading again tomorrow.....

Can I also mention that if you are over a size 18,which I most certainly am,then most places seem to think you are over 55 years old too, & stick with lovely shades such as peach :vom: or lilac :vom::vom:

Try buying something trendy when you are larger & you will find only a couple of places to cater for you.

Evans is great, bt M&S larger range is just dire

Yes, you're spot on Helen. I know if i shop at Monsoon i can generally get into a size smaller than i do at NEXT.

I worked with a pattern grader for a long time, and although it was in childrenwear what you have said is true for that age too. Each retailer has it's own basic size template they work from, and non are the same or consistent with each other.

Emma - I don't have the boob problem, but I do have a very broad back and shoulders which presents me with the same 'doing up of buttons' thing. (Is this getting too graphic?)

The solution is for us all to have our own tailors! What luxury!!

That's made me laugh Sarah!!

And the worst thing is the awful polyester fabric those shapless, square blouses and pleated skirts come in.

(I could be getting into hot water here...)

Well, I have just 3 years before I have to start wearing all that then :D

Next may make a size 16 - but the armholes are always too small.

I like Per Una - they always seem to fit properly.
