Two weeks owning a cube....and chickens *regular updates*

Recommended Posts

Your girls look very beautiful & happy. I didn't even know about Eglus etc when I bought my coop, already envious. I love the cube, very pricy though so will have to show husband that we can get along fine with chickens & maybe we'll update !!!! :P

Mine are still settling - 3rd day at home, so hoping to let them into their large run tomorrow, if they go to bed nicely tonight !!!

Henergy hope yours are settling in well :) I was bit concerned when i introduced the amberlinks as there were henpecking going on (mainly from mabel!!) but all seem to be doing well.

I admit the cube is expensive but it is worth the money. As we didnt want to keep the coop in one area this is ideal for moving around the garden, which we do every sunday to save the lawn and its very easy.

Morehens is dangerous, I started with 4 now have 18 :shh::anxious:

Your girls are lovely, hope you managed pancakes today with your own eggs

Thank you SC!! unfortunately not - didnt have enough eggs so had to buy some local ones

Girls are free ranging again today! OH is going out and ive decided to stay in so the girls can stay out a bit longer (how sad is that?!)

Just popped out in the garden to check on them and Bunty is happily eating the left over nann bread from last night, then just around the corner the other three.....

Hi, Just wanted to say welcome to chicken keeping & the forum. I have had my ladies since September along with me Eglu & extended run (my 40th birthday present from my brother :D )

I adore my chooks, they are kept on bark as they totally ruined my grass, along with my golden retreiver pup!! They all lay 6 days a week and the eggs are fab. Keep offering them a variety of foods, you will soon learn their favourites, mine go wild for grapes, cherry tomatoes and lettuce :P

(pink eglu)PP Doris GNR Mabel GNR Nellie !egg! Lots of!!

thanks all :)

How lovely to see them enjoying your garden. Exactly what mine have been doing. I used to have a white hen :lol:

Good luck with the new one.

They were quite reluctant to go in tonight, usually first sign of dusk and they all head in - not tonight

Good job my two white girls already have brown on them, although the dust bath today has given them a hint of black!! Good job it was raining earlier to get them washed off a bit

Latest update - we have more chickens!!!!

On another thread i mentioned collecting some chickens from the free range farm closing down.

we set off at 8.30 this morning and heading down to silverstone (via conventry - needed more boxes  )

We arrived at the farm about 11.30, just as i got to the farm my friend called asking if we could collect more chickens (talk about las minute!!)

Met Jo and her family, everyone was really helpful! Although i couldnt put the girls in the boxes as quick as they were being given to me!!

Below: full boot 8)

One of the new girlies - Gladys already found the other girls favourite part of the garden

Dorothy - she had laid an egg on the way home in her carrier - she does look a bit bedraggled compared to gladys but she is sweet :)

All the gang together!

183745_10150106434247914_504287913_6511207_1800524_n.jpg

They seem quite happy enough, they have found where the kitchen is and tried to get in a few times. They are quite vocal constantly chatting but wasnt sure if this was stress because they are away from their friends :(

Bedtime! everyone headed off to bed and then Dorothy decided she wanted a dust bath, so i didnt want to disturb her as she was really enjoying herself!! In the end i had to put them to bed - didnt take much catching...

looking forward to next weekend to get them all out FRing :P

i am hoping by moving the cube every sunday after a full clean out that it will not be too bad! it seems to be holding up so far. Every week once its been moved i rake the lawn, pulling up all the bits of moss and poo thats about the garden. its working 4 weeks later but will have to see how that goes. I am crossing my fingers (and toes)

Brilliant news! glad youre liking the thread :) what colour did you opt for? I know when i first were looking at these i wanted purple but then warmed to green as i thought it was a bit boring at first. Glad OH bought the green, it fits well in the garden

Hubby ordered the purple, but I changed it to green over the phone as I am a bit traditional and like you I thought it would like great amongst the garden greenery, Lauren at Omlet was so helpful. Just cannot wait until 4th April for the arrival of my cube and lovely girls. Had a look on the forum at some of the fabulous WIR that people have, hmmm maybe persuade the OH once he gets the initial arrivals installed. My friend was aghast about how much we had spent on a "hen house", but personally I feel the design, ease of cleaning and just overall fun appearance of eglus is worth it don't you?

They do love yoghurt, don't they! Mine like to have a really good shake of their heads once their beaks are covered in it and it goes absolutely everywhere.... all over the backs of the other chickens, and me if I'm fool enough to still be there when they do it (and I usually am!).
