Old old Premium bonds

Recommended Posts

Years ago we bought some premium bonds for our children. The bonds are at least 18 years old and when I have checked the numbers on the online checker, they don't even exist!

I see that you can only buy multiples of £100 now and I think the bonds we are are only worth £10 or £20.

Does anyone know if we can convert them into the new style or are they lost forever?

They absolutely ARE still valid!!! Just get in touch with NS&I (I'd write to them, there's an address on their website) and remind them of their existence and confirm you current address. NS&I are usually quite helpful so don't worry (and I've heard that a lot of people have a win when they contact NS&I to see if their bonds are still valid!!!)

Good luck!!

I have an even older Premium Bond ( my Gran bought it for the day I was born), it's for £5 but it's never won anything - I check every so often. Providing the Premium bond people have your current address they will notify you of any wins and there isn't an expiry date on them. Just give them a call, I'm sure it can be sorted out.

I used to work for NS&I, on the PR for the 50th anniversary of the premium bond, which was now about 16 years ago...

ALWAYS make sure they have your current address, and if you do win you will hear from them.

old bonds are still valid even if below the current £100 threshhold, but you can redeem them if you want.

the way NS&I is set up, the more bonds you hold the more chances you ahve to win (that sounds obvious doesnt it?!)

I'd also add that they are very efficient - I'm self-employed and use premium bonds to save up for my tax payments. I reckon the chance of a win is better than piddling amounts of interest, and if you want to take your money out is is very speedy - send off the form and the money will be in your bank in less than a week.
