Sam
Hi... Marmite has stopped laying for 3 days. I know it doesnt sound long but shes a young hybrid and has been laying 1 a day for months now. She also has quite a pooy behind... do you think it sounds like worms? Thanks.
Chucky Mama
Could well be, it wouldn't do her any harm to be treated (Flubenvet) especially if she hasn't been done for the last 3-4 months. You could give her a bit of probiotic in the shape of Avipro or Protexin Soluble which may help dry it up and also wont do any harm.
Sam
Thanks - just wanted an expert opinion! Will have a hunt around for flubenvet

The Dogmother
some people are easy to please Yup, my first course of action in that situation would be to worm her.

Sam
Just a quick question (to test how smart you really are ) I remember reading something about sticking it on with cod liver oil?! ... or am I thinking of something completely different
Chucky Mama
Oooh, pick me, pick me, I know this one....yes you can add a little cod liver oil to help it stick to pellets. I never do. The key is to mix, mix and mix some more. Weight out the amount, take a cupful and add your Flubenvet, then add more and more mixing well with each addition until it is all combined. Sam
I've just picked her up to check the vent, and when I picked her up, well, white liquid came out... It was the same consistency of water so I really don't know what it was!? Ordered the flubenvet last night and its been dispatched so will probably get it on monday. She hasn't laid again today but has been sitting on the nest in the morning again and when I opened the egg port she made this noise again. *here* I can't work this chicken out
Dolly
I'm no expert by any means, but that sounds like the noise of a broody hen who doesn't want to be taken off her nest! We've only had one hen do this and she sounded pretty much like this.
Sam
Thanks Dolly, I thought she was a bit broody but she comes out during the day... she is one confused girl! Shes a hybrid and I always thought that hybrids didn't go broody though If she is broody shes not very good at it
The Dogmother
Hybrids are less inclined to go broody, but some still do. If you suspect that she is broody, then I'd pop her in the broody cage asap before she gets too comfortable. Broody cage details here
Sam
Thanks for that Clare I will probably do that. Is it alright if I worm her while shes in the broody cage?
The Dogmother
No reason why not, although you ought to worm the lot of them at the same time. She will only need to be in the cage for 3 days, so will need to complete the rest of the 7 days course of Flubenvet with the rest of your flock. Sam
Thanks ! I just hope she doesn't make a racket in the morning! She cries when she has the 2m run, what will she be like in the cage ! Thanks again for the advice
The Dogmother
she'll squawk for a while, then realise that she's got all the food and drink she needs and shut up!
Sam
Day 5 of worming, and Blacky has laid an egg - a normal one!! (Saying that, I haven't cracked it yet ) She only went on the nest box today for about 20minutes just to lay her egg. I may well still do that starve, feed growers etc method to give her a break then start again just to ensure that she keeps laying normally. (Moved here ) As you said, nothing to lose Thanks for your help.
Plum
Yes I think it is as well. The white liquid is urates (chicken urine).
Sam
But I thought the little white bit on their poo was their urine? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick
Plum
Yes it is but sometimes they just pass the urates or the fluid falls over the droppings leaving the urates on the top. After an infection they can pass a lot more making thier knickers wet If it stinks then could be infectious fungal discharge which would be wet.
